Rectal prolapse is when the rectum is visible outside of the body.

This is a truly horrible experience. I want to warn people if you have a previously constipated kid or a pusher. My DD has always pushed and if yours does get them to stop. This is very common according to the GIs in patients with ulcerative colitis. I will continue to update this and feel free to chime in. I think I am the only person in the world dealing with this right now.

Rowans has been going on now for a week. They do not perform surgery for this until after a year of manual reduction.

The nightmare that won't go away. Since my DD just got out of hospital and had severe UC, 2 back to back Remicade infusions saved her colon temporarily. I feel the need to post this bc it is SO TRAUMATIC! If you have a weak stomach... My apologies ahead of time.

Rectal prolapse is when the rectum actually comes outside of the body when you poo. Now if you are in a flare and using the bathroom all the time. You see how this can become bothersome and very painful.

Tips and tricks:
#1 Deep breathing but only on the inhale when pushing a prolapse back in. If you child is crying you must get them to do this or you will start to freak out thinking you cannot get it back in.

#2 Use Only Vaseline or ky lubricant. This stinks but do not use anything for a rash or in this area other than these two things. Anything with zinc, lanolin, or any drug cannot get on the inside. This is difficult when trying to clean up without push anything in your rectum. Could cause more pain. Ky could make it slip out faster I just use Vaseline bc her bottom is red from all the diarrhea.

More to come. Family duties call.

#3 steroid enemas can irritate the prolapse but might be a need to control inflammation. A vicious cycle. Horrible!

#4 heat could cause more pain with the prolapse so if you use a heating pad for pain for the flare, I wouldn't.

#5 miralax can be your friend, too much could make albumin low or other important nutrient leave to body too quickly.

#6 pay attention to the color of the tissue. Blue and purple are bad. Call your GI if you see blue or purple rectal tissue.

If you see rice looking at the end these are ulcers. Kina hard to make out color through this. You need cortenemas. One they are cleared up discontinue use ASAP they made the prolapse bleed more...

#7 keep them talking if they talk they cannot push. Well without getting that I am pushing voice. Lol I read a book and ask lots of questions about the pictures on the page.

See and I thought we were the only ones.......:ylol:

One thing we found to help my son is to make him more aware when there was a prolapse. He immediately stops the BM which causes the prolapse to self-retract if the tissue has not been exposed to air for too long.

We were also told to use sugar water mixture and soak it in medical gauze if we could not get the prolapse to retract.
OUr max "out " time allowed by his GI is 10 minutes otherwise we have to soak/wrap/ have him sit on a rolled up towel or doughnut and head to the ER.

So far we have not had to do this yet.:shifty-t:
