I have a question about my C-reactive protein level. I was dx with IBS three years ago. Had a colonoscopy two years ago that was completely normal. I also had CT scan and MRE of small bowel back three years ago and that was normal as well. For the last three months my intestines have not been normal. I have soft stools and cramping. When I first had symptoms three years ago all I had was cramping and very bad intestinal pain, but normal looking stools. Three Months ago I had a bout of diarrhea and ever since when I do go, my stools are on the soft side. I had a stool calprotectin level done last month and it was also elevated ( normal was under 162) and I was at 384. I also had this other comprehensive stool DNA PCR test done that I had done by a functional practitioner last month and it also showed elevated Calprotectin ( their normal was 0-50) mine was 113.8 This comprehensive stool test also showed I have high SIgA levels ( normal is 0-1000) and I was at >5000. Not sure what that all means.

Anyhow, my GI doc does not seem concerned really because he says my colonoscopy was normal two years ago. He said he still thinks IBS. He said IBS can cause mild inflammation in some people they are finding out. ( I am not sure what to think about this). Well I went to see my primary care doctor and I asked her to do a CRP blood test on me to check my C-reactive protein. Sure enough it was elevated. ( normal is anything less than .80) mine was at 1.55

How high is my CRP level? Is it mildly elevated, high or what? My primary care doc is out on Vacation for two weeks now. I wont be able to ask her until she gets back. My GI doc, well forget it, he is hard to get a hold of. It takes the nurse three days to get back to me usually and I am sure he wont be concerned about it as usual. Can anyone tell me how high !.55 CRP level is? Like I said, Normal is under .80

Just very frustrated right now and not feeling well. It seems to me doctors do not know anything. I am working with a functional Practitioner right now to see if she can help me.

I am here for ya if you need to vent. I too am trying to figure what is going on. There have been many on this board that have been misdiagnosed for years before getting answers. You are not alone in this! ☺

Thanks Kero,

I am just confused with all of this. I am also frustrated that I am having to do all the leg work and investigating. Put it this way, if not for my asking to have my C-reactive protein levels checked and my Stool calprotectin, I would not even know they were elevated. I asked my primary care doc to order these tests for me. My GI keeps blowing it off saying IBS. He says because my colonoscopy and MRE were normal a couple years ago that he is not overly concerned.

I am about ready to just give up on western medicine. They just do not seem to know how to treat these types of Chronic illnesses. I am seeing a functional Practitioner who I am hoping will help me. She mentioned Probiotic enemas as a way of helping to restore the bowel Flora. She gave me recipe of how to make them and do them. She said it should calm inflammation. She also gave me this stuff called IgG 2000 CWP. It is a form of colostrum that is supposed to take down inflammation in the gut as well. It is a powder you mix in water and drink. I just wish I knew what is causing my elevated calprotectin level and C-reactive protein levels. My calprotectin was 384( normal is 162 and under). My GI said it is a very non-specific test and just means there are some WBC's in my stool. He said different things can cause this. He even said IBS can cause low levels of inflammation in the intestines! I am not sure what to think about it. I mean he is like head of Gastroenterology at a Top hospital here where I live so I would hope he knows what he is talking about. He has been a GI doctor for over 35 years so has lots of experience. However, I also know from being chronically ill with other stuff( IC of the bladder, Fibro, Chronic Fatigue etc..) that most western med doctors are not very knowledgeable nor helpful when it comes to these types of chronic illnesses and do not know how to treat them. It is just very frustrating.
