I'm trying to work out if my Doctor is having a laugh or not. I live in Preston, he wants me to go to Lancaster to have a colonoscopy done. I really don't fancy going on the train or public transport, there is nobody to drive me so I said that I couldn't drive myself as I would be having sedation for the procedure. Guess what his reply was? Don't have the sedation. I'm really looking forward to this now. Not only do I get a day from hell while the stuff purges me but I can look forward to indescribable pain after a 45 minute drive from home!

Anyone else had this without any form of sedation?

I would find a way to get a ride if I were you. I mean I'm not sure, but are you allowed to take a cab? I know they have some stupid rules even here where I live. They wont even let you take a cab! But, I did know one lady who got a ride from this hospital service. They actually can have someone drive you home. Maybe look into that if there is something like that at the hospital you are having it done at. I know I myself would not want to be awake for this test, it can be VERY painful, especially if you already have irritation inside. There are people who have had it done without sedation. My mom had it done once ( they would sedate her due to her extrememly high blood pressure) and she said it was very very painful. She did not even have any inflammation or anything either. Everyone is different in that instance though.

Hi Jan...
I was in a major flare about 2 years ago and my GI Dr only put me in a twilight..well because I hate medical procedures my anxiety was bad and the twilight sedation didnt work so I felt everything and it hurt very bad and was very uncomfortable..but again I was in a really bad flare. I made it thru though!! From now on I make sure my new Dr puts me OUT!!!

tell him no chance, you want the sedation but you cant get to Lancaster, so he will either have to have it done closer to your home or let you stay in overnight

you will be very uncomfortable afterwards with or without sedation, and if you are sedated, it will take a good few hours before your able to drive home or use public transport

The times I've had the endoscopies have been my days off. I've been in no shape to go into work afterwards. So paid or not, it's probably a good idea not to plan on going in afterwards.

I've always had someone drive me both ways and this last time when I was put out for mine was probably a good idea. If at all possible, I would recommend someone to at least come with you. Good luck and sending some hugs your way.

Hi Jan,
What is the reason they have to send you to Lancaster if you don't mind me asking. I can believe a Dr could be that unfeeling :ymad: because I guess at the end of the day they don't really have a clue unless they have been through a procedure themselves, or had unbelievable pain themselves. Ask if they have any volunteers at the hospital who could take you home after the procedure. Some hospitals have them.

I hope all goes well for you.
juljul xx
