I'm 22 years old and I'm having a bad flare with cramping, diarrhea and no appetite (I've lost 13 pounds in two weeks). My doctors are trying to figure out what's wrong and I should be getting a scope soon.

In the meantime, I'm taking Tramadol for the cramping and pain. I've been taking it for quite awhile and it seems to dull the pain a little bit, but doesn't completely take care of it.

Does anyone here have experience with Tramadol? Is it something that you can take long-term? Will I develop a tolerance or have withdrawals when I stop? I had been on Oxycodone before, but I didn't want to continue taking such a strong, addictive drug for a long period of time.

It sounds like your GI is taking good care of you and understands the need for pain med. having a daughter who is 15, they dont offer any pain meds other than tylenol.

I have heard good things about the Tramadol. take it if you need it!!! hopefully someone will be on soon that knows more about it.

ARe you giving yourself protein shakes, smoothies, juicing? that may give you some nutrients that your body may be better able to absorb.

My daughters have both taken Tramadol. They both say the same thing, it doesn't take the pain away completely most of the time, but it does help. My older daughter took it daily for three months at one point, her doctor said she was not worried about her getting addicted to it. When she stopped it, there was no withdrawal at all.

Thanks! Hopefully I can continue taking this until my issues are resolved.

If anyone else has experience with Tramadol, I'd love to hear your thoughts as well.

Tramadol did nothing for my pain. I now take 3 percocet 5-325 daily. It takes the pain away and slows down the D.

Hi :) I've been on Tramadol and I found it helped with my pain. Could your doctor increase your dosage?
I found that I did get withdrawals after coming off it but my body is super sensitive to medication so it could be that. If you do get the withdrawals, don't worry, they will go away and there are ways to deal with it while there.
I'm not sure how much you want to know, so if there's anything else, just ask and I'll answer as well as I can x

Hi I've been on tramadol but after a while of me having to use it every day I found I did build up a tolerance to it meaning I would have had to take a higher dose to get it to work which isnt something I want to do. I didn't have any withdraw symptoms from it, but I would recommend from personal experience not to use it all the time if possible.

I would be careful. Tramadol is as addictive as OC and can cause withdrawal. It was a very effective pain med imo. Just know what you are dealing with.

I use Tramadol as needed because I have back issues as well as Crohn's. I generally use it once or twice a week and have never taken more than 2 in one day. I have found it works well for abdominal pain and muscle pain, but not well for nerve pain or my rectal Crohn's. However in all cases it decreases pain. Since I have never taken it long term, I have no experience on withdrawals. I so totally miss ibuprofen. It worked better than all of them.

Thanks for all of the comments. I'm still on the Tramadol, my primary care doctor gave me another prescription for it and he wants me to continue taking it while my GI doctor figures out what medication I should be on to keep my Crohn's under control. It seems to be working well. I have noticed that taking one pill isn't as effective as it was when I first started taking the medicine, which is concerning. I just want to stay on this for a short period of time and then hopefully get off all pain medicine once my Crohn's is in check.

I used tramadol a lot, like you didn't completely take the pain away. I found it worked better when taken at the same time as paracetamol. I didn't get any withdrawls from quitting the meds, I stopped taking them as I was having 6 - 8 tablets a day and was severely constipated, I am now flaring again - whether this ties together I dunno, I'm done guessing what's going on inside. If tramadol appears to be helping you manage your pain whilst your Dr is figuring your meds out go for it this disease is bad enough at times.

Take it easy and get well soon x

I take tramadol Hcl 50mg whenever I have abdominal pain. I have crohn's disease. I take 2 tablets. It works most of the time. The pain goes away in about 15 minutes. Sometimes, though, I do not feel the medicine and the pain exists. Anyway, I keep the medicine handy with me. I never know when I will have my stomach pain.

Hello. I was on tramadol last year. I am very sensitive to drug effects and so limited my intake to a max of 2 per day when needed. It works a lot better too if you take it with paracetamol, like someone else has already said. For some reason I can't tolerate it now as it makes me vomit badly. It's a real shame as I found it really helpful. Been prescribed a few other pain meds since then but the side effects kill my insides.
