feacal calprotectin how does it help diagnose ibd?

i was wondering why ive never had this test and how accurate it is in diagnosing crohns disease or colitis ?

i have been 100% diagnosed now so i dont particularly need the test but id love to hear from all of you that have had the test and had positive or negative results , so that i know for the future instead of having colonoscopies and invasives stuff .

Ok, I don't know for sure, but I did a bit of digging because they did this test on me with the tagline 'this will prove you have IBS not IBD' . . . .

It measures some protein thats in your poop. Apparently a score between 1 and 50 is normal and would be suggestive of IBS and NO INFLAMMATION.

The scores thereafter are a little bit of a grey area, some studies suggest 450 should be considered 'severe inflammation' others give other numbers.

However, my result was 600 exactly. The docs are saying 'hmm, a bit of inflammation'. So not entirely certain what level constitutes what level of inflammation . . . . or if the studies I read are correct and the docs just don't want to backtrack??

Hope that made some sense . . . .

That's interesting. I had mine tested and it was 'over 500' which my doctor said was as high as they could test for. Because it was the same two tests in a row, he assumed the medication was not working. I said maybe it went from 1000 to 502 or something, but he insisted it could be tested that high.

My understanding is that it is a newish test that can test for general inflammation in the poop so can save colonoscopies but cannot of course locate the exact location.

thats what id like to know now lol

it might b worth a shot anyway if i can get it just for my own piece of mind

Well, I have had this test several times and it didn't show anything. It is carried out to show that there is an inflammation in the abdomen but does not specify the place. During my last flare up, it came to be 4mg only. I've read that when one is in a flare up, the results of this test are sometimes negativ. So, it is not reliable, for me at least. Take care!
