Hi

I am undiagnosed with IBD but have had symptoms that the doctor put down to IBS for several years. I am 36, female. I am due to have a colonoscopy tomorrow as I have had an episode of severe pain, and 2 fecal calprotectin results of 550. I saw the gastroenterologist last week and he has worried me! He asked if I had family history of bowel cancer as my result was so high.
My main symptoms are constipation then diarrhoea, constant pain on right hand side and dizziness and bloating, feeling nauseous all the time.
Please excuse me if this an obvious question but this is my first post on here and first time on this forum... but has anyone else had this result and what if anything were they diagnosed with?

Hello and welcome but sorry you had to seek us out.Cancer is always top of the list of worries no matter what symptoms are showing up in any part of the body.Your calprotectin level shows that there is inflammation in your digestive tract.Mine is usually 300-400,but many on the forum have levels much higher, some into the thousand +.Your other symptoms do point to crohns or other IBD problems, but it's not for me to give you a diagnosis of course.I think it was unfair of your doctor to mention cancer so early in your diagnosis.Good luck with your colonoscopy tomorrow and might I say that the prep.is usually worse than the actual test. Please let us know how things go,and try not to worry, not easy I know. There will be others around soon to give you their advice and support.Best to you.

Hi I am sorry to hear about your troubles. There are people on this forum who have had results in the thousands, so yes your result is high but it could be a lot higher. It is too high to be explained by IBS. If this has been going on for years I would say you could possibly be diagnosed with IBD after your colonoscopy. I think bowel cancer would be unlikely to rumble on for years and especially rare at your age, so I don’t think you should worry about that. The colonoscopy should hopefully reveal what is going on. If you see inflammation and ulcers then they may diagnose you with IBD.

Good luck with the colonoscopy tomorrow.

Thank you for such a prompt reply! Thank you for your reply and advice. I am trying to keep busy until I start the prep. I will be glad when tomorrow is over!

Hi

I had my colonoscopy on Monday and nothing was found, some random biopsies were taken by the consultant. The consultant has also referred me to have an MRI of my abdomen and small bowel with contrast. I felt relieved itching was found but still concerned why I am having symptoms, I am also experiencing shooting pains in my legs and pain in my armpit and my glands in my neck are enlarged. My MRI is on Tuesday 17/10. Thanks for the support, the prep was much worse than the actual colonoscopy!

Best wishes.Glad you got the prep.over hahaha.Good luck with the MRI.Just because your tests aren't showing anything doesn't mean your OK.You know how you should feel. We've got an Undiagnosed thread you might find interesting. You'll be surprised just how many people come under that catargory.
