first colonoscopy 2moro..scared :(

Hi everyone

I have my first colonoscopy 2moro at 2.15! I no i am a baby but I am terrified! :pale: ive heard people say the prep is worse im just in the middle of that now its the actual procedure im worried about. I am having sedation (pethidine and something else ive been told) just worried it wont be strong enough to knock me out. Thought id ask about everyone else's experiences to maybe put my mind at ease

hey :)

I had a colonoscopy just over a week ago, and i was really worried about it too. >.< But it turned out the prep is the worst bit like everyone says :p that drink is just horrible lol. When i went in for the actual colonoscopy, all i remember is walking in, them sticking the needle in my hand (and i HATE needles, but it didn't really hurt that much :p), and from then on, i don't remember a thing.

its really kinda odd, as you think that you will remember it all since your only sedated. So you really have nothing to worry about. The other thing that i was worried about was the embarassment .. but these doctors do this everyday, so they're used to it ^^.

So just don't worry, it'll be over before you know it, and you won't remember a thing! Hope it goes well. ;)

Hello!
Gosh; I was in your position. TERRIFIED.
The day before and night was food like jelly and then this drink that would clear my bowels...

PICOLAX :O

You may or may not have been on this. It causes me to be sick violently; and have to go into hospital and have a drip.
It wont be the same for you; as you havent had a reaction yet:)

For the actual thing....It's NOTHING I had this needle thing in my hand; giving me the medicine; NO worries at all.
I WAS NOT a fan of needles; whereas I am used to them now. They said to count to ten; and then. I WAS OUT.

I woke up. It was DONE ! :) I was diagnosed with Crohns; and when I woke up; they asked me to count to 10 in French. It was fine. If I hadnt had such a dreadful prep; it would have not scared me as much.

Trust me; you can do it. Your asleep; you wont even know it happened.

Don't Worry! Good Luck; and AWAIT THE RESULTS! :) :)

:goodluck: you can do this!

Thanks so much 2 both of u for your reassurance! i have had to take the dreaded picolax 2day too and do feel so nauseous! I cant wait until its all out the way i really hope the drugs work and i am totally under and havent got a clue what has happened :s xxxx

Kimmy86...
Oh no; atleast you got through it; it's not normal to be sick with it; but its grose so you might, with my it stayed down 1 or 2 hours and then I threw up. After that it just wouldnt stay down; drip thing or not:( I had to stay in hospital for a week rather than a day case:)
They will work honestly!! You won't have a clue!:) xxxxx Until you wake up, I rember all of that:)xxxx

Kimmy, I've had 10 colonoscopies in my life, and not a single one was anywhere near as bad as the prep. For most of the colonoscopies, I don't remember a thing. And if you do feel something, ask the doctor for more of the medications.

Just echoing what everyone else has said so far....

The prep day is always the worst part of the process. The Miralax prep though helps with that a lot though. Finally a prep that I'm able to choke down with no problems.

Needles don't bother me at all, so getting the IV going is simple and then I just spend the rest of the time cracking jokes with the nurses until it's my turn.
Once in the procedure room, after getting situated how they want me to lay on one side, I watch the doc start putting the good drugs into the IV and it's lights out. I've never once witnessed the syringe emptied, I'm out that fast.

I've had 5 or 6 scopes in the past 4 years or so, sometimes along with an endoscopy procedure as well at the same time, and I've never felt or remembered anything about them.

Sedation procedures do vary from country to country; but if you want to be out of it and aren't, demand they stop the procedure and give you another dose. You are in control!

And the prep totally is the worst part.

My experience was not a pleasant one. I will not get into details, because i do not want to worry you. My situation was different. If i were you, i would ask to be put completely under.
Have you had any cat scans or lower GIs? If so did they prove anything to be inflamed?

The only thing worse than the prep is waking up in the middle of the procedure. The Doc hit a rather sensitive area, and I pretty much bolted awake feeling the Sigmoidoscope like it was a Chestburster from the Alien movies.

What happened to me is rare, I'm a pretty big dude and can usually tolerate a lot. You'll be fine.

I have my first one tomorrow, too. And all I can say is prep sucks! I have to drink two bottles of magnesium citrate and it is just yucky! And my legs are numb from the seat which I sit on now! <--- was that too much? I don't think so!

Kimmy86;
I wish you the most luck in the world;
It's the big day; I bet your waiting for some answers!
GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK GOOD LUCK!

Be heard; Be strong; Be proud!

Thanks so much 4 all the support :) all over and done with now and honestly wasnt as bad as i thought i was so relaxed after the drugs it was a breeze! as 4 the resuts i do have crohns....as suspected! It is my small bowel that is affected apparently its very inflamed and ulcerated I am already on pentassa and have now been put on a drug called azathioprine I am hoping this helps with the constant flare ups although im not sure yet whether this will be a long term thing I remember vaguely hearing the nurse talk about weening me off them while i was high as a kite on all the drugs

loads of love to all of u 4 ur kind messages xxxxxx

I was going to write a seperate post 4 this but hopefully everyone will see it anyway :) i do have 1 concern after my colonoscopy :s the morning after when i went to the toilet (only 4 a wee) the water was red obviously blood! I had been told to expect some blood as they took biopsies during the test since then it's been fine until today! this morning i go to the toilet (a wee again ha ha) and there is blood in the water again! I would have thought if there was bleeding it would come from the other end??? bit concerned xxxx

Glad it went well! Sorry for diagnosis. Call the nurse right away about the blood in the pee. Start reading up in this forum, you must become your own advocate and not just rely on the doctors. Hugs to you!

I had a couple spots of blood, but yours sounds a bit more serious. As was said above, definitely call your nurse.

I'm really sorry about your diagnosis. But I'm glad you got some answers. The medicine should help you quickly. I'm crossing my fingers for you. Good luck. And keep us updated on your current issue.

Im glad things went smoothly for you.. I am in the small percentage of people that actually woke up during the colonoscopy. It was a nightmare. glad you through it ok. :)

I was awake throughout the whole thing just very relaxed and drowsy due to the drugs other than a bit of cramping and pain in my tummy it wasnt too bad! i have had no blood since them 2 shows so just going to see how it goes if i get any more i will call the hospital. Jessi was urs when you went 4 a wee? thanks again everyone xxx :)

Colonoscopy is a breeze. the prep is the worst part. you do not remember or feel anything after you wake up. avoid the sigmoidoscopy. if you are going to be ass raped with a camera, you do not need to be awake and face down ass up with a huge flatscreen of your insides in front of you. never again thank you. i want to be knocked out when they put a camera up my butt.

oh god i have never even heard of the sigmoidoscopy but doesnt sound good i will take ur advice an try 2 avoid that at all costs ha ha thanks xx

No... Only spots of blood during a BM. Bleeding stopped all the way after a couple of days, thanks to the dreaded prednisone.

I had a flex sig in March, and they gave me a sedative for it. If you need one again, demand a sedative.

Since I have moved farther North and a new Gi, he gives me 3 drugs, and I am out! One of them is the forget drug and no drowsiness. They call him the scope king! Never afraid of them any more, just hate preping and no food :(.

I'm glad everything went fine!!

I have my colonoscopy tomorrow. I have drink Citrafleet and 2l juice now. I hope this prep works. I have my colonoscopy in anesthesia.
