first time ever on a forum

Hi all.

Never really used the computer before but after after being quite ill for the last 8 months and having to stay in home alot more came across this forum that seems to have the ability to make you feel not so isolated and that other people are suffering the same.
Currently I am on a Modulen diet (4weeks in) that i must say has given me a new lease of life.
Was diagnosed with Crohns when I was 19, took 3 years to diagnose and I would say I didn't really suffer that bad. Just used to lose the odd day off work with bad stomach cramps and vomiting followed by 8 hours in the bathroom. Started developing fistulars around the anus that eventually required surgery to remove, took two operations over three months to remove one so decided to leave the smaller fistula that does shrink with antibiotics.
Cramps and sickness continued intermitently untill I gave myself a hernia due to sraining whilst being sick (I'm a bit of a screamer when I vomit) so ended up back on the operating table.
Then last year started I being ill more often and stopped responding to prednisolone that usually worked wonders. Kept pestering my IBD nurse and we agreed that as my weight was dropping so rappidly to get the tests I needed done quickly that I check in to hospital as an in-patient and get get all the tests done in a week instead of waiting months for each test. So after an endiscopy, ultrasound, x-rays,colonoscopy and MRI they finally found that my small bowel was riddled with crohns and an added complication of abcesses on the outside of my small intestine. So after massive amounts of IV steriods and antibiotics my weight went from 161lbs to 228lbs due to water retension. After two weeks in the gastro ward along side two bedriden alcoholics who each had to use the bed pan every half hour (YUK!!) they put me on oral medication so that i could go home the following day.
Woke up next morning feeling ill with a temperature and kept getting hotter and hotter until they realised that one off the abcesess had burst and I was going in to septic shock. After a few frantic hours they stabilized me and put me back on the IV drips for another two weeks. Surgens recommended removing my small bowel but the Dr wanted to start me on Humira -which we did.
Went back to work in September on a cocktail of drugs but I was really struggling with eating due to the pain and started losing weight again. Kept on to my IBD nurse and ended up back in hospital for an MRI scan that showed that the abcessess were still there so stopped all crohns drugs and went back on antibiotics. Was taking painkillers every four hours since I came out of hospial even through the night and was really struggling eating any food, then my dieticion recommended I tried Modulen. I had nothing to lose as didn't want surgery so started ten days befor Christmas. first three days were hard but once I cut food out completly started feeling better and six days in stoped taking painkillers and haven't had any since. Steadily putting weight on and feeling great, still on antibiotics waiting for another MRI to see if this has got rid of the abcessess.
If you managed to read all this you must be someone special. I feel better for sharing so even if I get no replys it was just nice to unload.:)

Thanks

Well hello, and I read all of your post. This is the perfect place for support, knowledge and understanding! I'm finding all this out myself.

Hi chippy and welcome to the forum! Glad to read that the modulin diet is working so well for you!.....

Please hang out and take a look around- there are quite a few people here who have been on either that or other liquid diets among other things.....and also have dealt with fistulas, abcesses etc.....

Hey welcome to the forum! Take a look around, I hope we help you find some of what you're looking for. You're welcome to "unload" as well any time you feel like. We even have a sub forum specifically for that purpose!

Hi Chippy and welcome to the forum :bigwave: Read all of your post and it sucks to that you have had such a bad time of it but I am pleased that the Modulen is getting you back on the right path. Personally I quite liked the taste of it (strawberry and banana for me) compared to the other liquid shakes I have tried. Keep us updated on the MRI appt, I will keep my fingers crossed that it has shown an improvement with the abcessess.

Thanks for the replies.
shall keep you posted about the MRI.
It's surprising how nice everyone is on this forim

Hi Chippy and welcome to the forum.
I wish this had been around when I was diagnosed all those years ago.
I'm new here too and everyone is so nice, helpful and supportive and the best thing is we've all been there in varying degrees.
Hang in there and keep us posted
Sending gentle hugs to you

:welcome: Chippy, that is my nickname for chips lol.... you are brave to have an MRI, so far I have been able to avoid them. Not sure I ever could. Very highly claustrophic. Yeah I am a suck .

Keep us posted on your results!

Hi Pen.

Had been in hospital for two weeks before my fitst MRI and was so worn out that I fell asleep in the machine with the nurse calling me to wake up in the earphones. Quite an achievement I think because they are very loud.:ysmile:

:thumright: Hey Chippy, welcome and am happy to read that you are improving on the Mod diet! Wow--can't believe that you slept thru the MRI--just shows what extreme fatigue and sickness can do to a body! It's also amazing how disciplined we Crohnies can get with our diets. Sure it is really tough to get used to a liquid/bowel rest regimen---but feeling good is feeling great! Hope that you continue on the path of improvement--keep us updated. :rosette1: Dana

I'm not good with MRI machines either - am claustrophobic too.

It don't matter that they're playing music and chatting to me thru the headphones.......just get me outta there!!!!! :pale:
