Well, after going through all the stress and pain last week to get the plug put in, we ended up back at the hospital yesterday afternoon. Some of the stitches came away inside and the plug came loose and came to a rest with part of it sticking out his bottom. :( Poor boy was so uncomfortable and it hurt when he went to the toilet. They paged the surgeon who took him into theatre to see what happened. There were only two stitches left holding the top of the plug so he had to take it away. We have no way of knowing if any of the material is left in the fistula or not. He said it was clean looking so he left the tract in peace in the hope it might close on its own.
The surgeon was very disappointed and was a bit annoyed that they had changed the design of the plug before the op, which kind of threw his plan a bit. If the tract doesn't close we have to hope no infection takes hold, as we really don't want another abscess! We can try again in 2/3 months if Andrew wants.

Oh no! I'm so sorry, Sascot. How's he feeling otherwise? Is it less painful now that it's out?

Oh, I'm so sorry. So disappointing for you and Andrew! I hope he's feeling better too!

I remember this was a new type of surgery or treatment... is the surgeon still optimistic that this surgery can work and that this was just an unlucky occurrence? Is he optimistic that, if he tries again, this situation is unlikely to happen again?

Poor Andrew, very frustrating after having gone through so much, to not have it work. :(

Oh no! How disappointing! So sorry it didn't work. I hope Andrew is comfortable now. Poor pumpkin...poor mommy!

Oh no!! :( I am so sorry Sascot!! I can imagine how devastating this is, we had high hopes this would work for you guys :( lots of hugs and prayers coming your way :ghug: xxxooo

So sorry this didn't work. Sending big hugs and prayers your way. Our poor boys with these %#*€ fistulas. I had such hopes this would work for Andrew.

Thanks everyone. Andrew's pain levels greatly decreased once it came out. Poor boy - he is tired and bored.
Basically the company added a "button" at the top of the plug which remained outside the fistula (inside the rectum) covering the internal hole and gets stitched in place. So of course everytime he was doing the toilet it must have been pushing it down till some of the stitches broke and started pushing the whole thing downwards.:ybatty:
The poor surgeon was annoyed with himself as it obviously changed his plans. He now wishes that he had just cut off the button and put the plug in completely and closed the hole inside with a stitch like he originally planned.
If we do it again in 3 months, he will cut off the button and do it as originally planned (and I will be asking for extra pain relief!).

I feel for your son and doctor. I mean we've all had those times where we wish we would have done it different. Hopefully the doc has learned for the next time......well that's if your boy lets it happen.

Feeling really down tonight. Andrew is really struggling to get back to normal after all this. He is absolutely exhausted - I mean, he was never really full of energy, but this is worse than usual. He was supposed to go back to school tomorrow, but I have put it off till Monday next week. He is missing some really important tests that they are doing to see which classes they should go into next year and also to make their reports.
Feeling blah! :(

That is not good Sascot :( has he had bloods and iron done recently? Just wondering if he had significant bleeding during/post op whether he is anaemic?? It could also be the 'letdown' of adrenaline after going through so much and then having it not even work. Our ds is still asleep at 8:40 am, another day of school will be missed as it takes him ages after waking up to go to the toilet, have a long and hot sitz bath, shower, take his meds and pain killers, have breakfast - and often by that time he is exhausted. I am looking forward to seeing what the supplementary EN and iron infusions will do for his energy levels. Lot's of hugs and prayers xx

Sascot,
So sorry to hear it didn't work! sending lots of healing thoughts and fingers triple crossed that no infection sets in and he heals up on his own!!!
(Sorry just realized darn spell check inserted grim in there)

MEGA hugs to you and your lad Sascot…:ghug: :(:(:(

How is Andrew doing? Is he feeling any better?

Dusty. xxx

Andrew is doing well. He has been building up school this week - today is his first full day back. He is still taking the Flagyl for 4 weeks, but otherwise back to normal (for him ). I think the outside "hole" has closed up, so my only concern is if the fistula is still there, that he may develop an abscess because there is no way for the stuff to come out.
Just going to try to relax and hope for the best. Maybe it worked even without the plug!

This is so fab to hear after all he has been through! :):):)

Fingers, toes and everything else crossed that fistula heals! :goodluck:

Dusty.

So happy to hear he is doing better!!!! Hopefully he will be all healed and be able to enjoy the holidays with no pain or worries!
