My son had a perroneal abscess removed on september 19th. Here it is December 30th and it is stilll with infection. They are doing a fistulagram and ct scan on the 7th of Jan. to see if it will require surgery to close the fistula. We are a little nervous as we don't know what kind of surgery this will involve, Has anyone had to go thru this with their child?

our son, kian had a fistula 2 years ago and had surgery. it didnt take too long to heal up, it was around 6-8 weeks til kians fully healed. It wasnt a huge wound and not too deep so didnt need packed but was treated with medical manuka honey and kept very clean, im glad to say he is ok now. Had a fissure couple weeks back so was another night in hospital as they didnt know if was another fistula or not and thank goodness it wasnt so they went in and cleaned it all out and we back treating with manuka again. is your son on any meds? x

No advice with fistulas but just want to say kids are pretty resilient and heal faster then adults. I was shocked how fast my daughter was up and moving after her surgery. I know any surgery is scarey for us parents when it is our children. Keep us posted on how he is doing. What hospital are you guys being seen at?

Hi, my son had an abscess/fistula at the beginning of the year. He had surgery to removed the infected tissue but we are still left with the fistula.
I recently spoke to the surgeon about fistula surgery. There seem to be 3 options I know about
1/ they cut the along the fistula and hope that the tissue then heals together properly
2/ they put a seton in to keep it open and allow it to drain
3/ they can put a plug in and line the fistula with some sort of irritant, to make the skin want to heal itself (this is apparently quite new - our surgeon had never done it)
It all depends on where the fistula is as to which option they tend to choose.
Good luck.

Thank you so much for your input. You guys are reallly helping. Our son will be seen in Denver at Rocky Mountain Childrens Hospital. We will definately let you guys know how it goes, Thanks

Hey Lori,

Both of my children have had surgery. My son had fistulae and abscesses and also had a sinogram but his issues were intra abdominal not perianal.

As kimmidwife has said, these kids are wicked tough and are up and on the go like you wouldn't believe. No preconceived ideas surely makes a difference! Although the surgeries would be different my son has had a very positive result from his surgery and has been in remission since that time, so 20 months now. My daughter had emergency surgery but I suspect she also had intra abdominal fistulae and abscesses. She too has been in remission since her surgery 6 and 1/2 years ago.

Good luck with the tests!
