Hey again, just a quick question about Flagyl. During a trip to the hospital I was prescribed Flagyl for my abscess. While I was on Flagyl I ended up in the hospital to get surgery for my abscess (Not flagyl related). After my surgery, they prescribed me more flagyl. Should I cancel out the first prescription or should I keep taking it until both bottles are done? One prescription is for 10 days, the other for 7. I hope this makes sense to you guys. I know some people take it for months at a time so I thought it was weird I was only given it for a week at a time. Would it hurt to keep going until both bottles are done?

Also, they say drinking while on Flagyl is a BIG no no. How long does it stay in your system for after you stop taking it? Thanks guys

I'm on flagyl (also Cipro) aswel for an abscess, and I believe that you should give it at least 2 days before you drink. So no alcohol for me on Xmas day or St.Stephens Day, (the 26th of December, maybe it's only in Ireland that it's celebrated) but I'm finished up my antibiotics a couple of days before New Years so yay for me.

And for Xmas I have other ways to "celebrate" myself, thankfully I'll have excess food for the munchies ...

:lol2:

My take on it would be that the second prescription cancels out the first as one was pre op and one post op. It wouldn't hurt to take both until finished as such but in this circumstance I don't think that is what your doctor intended.

As we all know, only too well, doctors have widely varying opinions on treatments...my son was on Flagyl for 3 months post op as his specialist said research indicated that doing so increased your chances of gaining and maintaining a longer remission. (((shrug)))

You have to wait 48 hours after completing your course before you start drinking alcohol again.

Dusty. :)

Yes I think it was you Dusty that I saw talking about being on Flagyl for a few months. So what would you guys do? I tried calling my doctor to see what he would do and he is on vacation for Christmas.

Yep! Matt was on Flagyl for 3 months pre op and 3 months post op.

I get the feeling you want to complete both courses, yeah? If you do, then as I said before it won't do you any harm.

Dusty. :)

I would take both course... but I only say that cause Flagyl does me great favours when I take it (even though I hate its taste...:mad2:). I have been on flagyl for months (4-5?) when I was a teenager and again this year I had it for 3 weeks. If it is a matter of 17 days all together, I would not worry and just take it for that time. Unless you have some odd neurological symptoms.

And yes... alcohol and flagyl = big no, NO! It leads to a kind of "antabuse" reaction and well, that is not a fun reaction. I've also been told 48 to 72 hours before drinking.

Yes Dusty, I would like to take both. The surgeon talked so highly of Flagyl when I had my first surgery, yet she only gave me a 7 day prescription. I didn't think it would do any harm to keep taking it, as it should just help get rid of the infection. Thanks for the replies guys :)

I would take both-I've had excellent results with Flagyl even though it makes me nauseous.

It helps me acheive remission without upping the biologicals or the dreaded pred.

i'm late to this thread and you're most likely done your course. I was on it for tooth issues, everything said wait 48 hours.
I was impatient and drank after 36 hours and was fine. The pharmacist told me that there is a very good chance that it will discolour your urine. If it does when it goes back to normal looking you should be fine as that will show it is out of your system.

Much like you it was a sober, sober Christmas for me.

Yeah, the flagyl is all done now. I spent my whole Christmas/New Years vacation sober. I still had fun though so it was worth it.

Yep, it was the same for me a well, a dry old time! It was a choice of that or try and get seen at the Hospital a day or two before Xmas. Saw the Surgeon today and he was very happy with the result.

I've not had any problem with just waiting 24 hours after the last dose before having a single drink. If you really plan on having a session I'd leave it longer.
