Hi guys I'm having my first real flare up in about seven years I've been put on pred but I'm worried about loosing more weight.
What do you guys try to eat when flaring?

Hi Andy..

I find that simple, low fibre foods are easiest for me when I'm feeling really rough.

Things like white rice, mashed potatoes, chicken etc are easy to digest and can be a good source of protein and calories. Soups and meat broths can be good for when you are really struggling. I also find scrambled eggs really good but they can give you gas.

Everyone is different so it might take a bit off playing around to work out what's good for you, but generally plain, simple meals work well.

Weirdly, my body almost tells me what to eat. I can look at something and thing 'that won't sit well in my stomach'. Like if my parents are cooking a Sunday roast or something, I'll leave things out like cabbage and anything gassy. Sometimes my stomach will start to hurt more just contemplating eating a certain food, like it's thinking for me. Or like a voice telling me 'No, do not make me digest that!'

I tend to stick to the simplest of foods. Meat, eggs and certain vegetables. I too like potatoes or carrots, but I couldn't eat anything like broccoli, for some reason I just know what would make things worse. I agree soups are great too.

Always make sure to take sips of water during a meal too, I believe it helps with digestion and makes it easier for your gut, almost allowing it to pass through more smoothly.

Sorry if I haven't been a great help! Just keep it simple really.

Fish can be great when flaring - great protein without the bulk of red meat or the fibre issues of veggies. My first GI's advice on this was simple: eat whatever you think you can.

Thanks guys I've mainly been juicing and eating custard I had some soup too.
Will try some rice and chicken tomorrow maybe some fish I'm scared I'm going to loose more weight

I stick to pretty bland foods when flaring. I have celiac and other food allergies so my diet is already pretty restricted, but when my stomach is upset I go for rice, potatoes, bananas, applesauce, soups, tea, and anything else that is mild and easy to digest.

Bland food here too at the moment - soup, mashed sweet potato, chicken, bananas, white gluten-free bread, scrambled egg whites, salmon all seem to be okay. Vegetables are otherwise a no for me though.

I cannot even eat bananas, they seem to reform in my digestive system and painfully negotiate my strictures. I used to be a vegetarian so I find it awfully hard to ignore vegetables and fruit

Have you looked at the Specific Carbohydrate Diet Intro diet? Whether or not you decide to commit to SCD, the intro diet is supposed to be composed of foods that are really easy to digest and help heal your gut (and like all of SCD, help restore the balance of bacteria). It is a really simple homemade chicken soup, eggs, pureed carrots, plain broiled meat patties (I used ground turkey), and gelatin made with 100% grape juice or apple cider. You can learn more from scdlifestyle.com or Breaking the Vicious Cycle.

I should add that the intro diet is only intended to be followed for a few days (I believe 3-5). On SCD you would then start adding in other foods one at a time.
