My doctor asked me today if I wanted to get the flu shot, I didn't have an answer since I wanted a few opinions first.

Does it make a difference if you have crohns disease?
To those who have gotten it has it caused problems?

I am on Imuran and I decided to get the flu shot since I'm at higher risk of getting an infection. What meds are you taking?

I had no problems with my flu shot.

So I asked my GI about this last month, and he said that while crohn's related complications have been described, they are rare. Note that Im not on any medication at the moment, so that might change things

I get my flu shot every year, and have not had any problems with it. I take immuran.

If you are immuno compromised, then you are wide open to catching the flu and having it hit you with little or no immune system to protect you. there are some meds that add risk to crohnies getting shots... potential interactions, (I think?) But my GI heartily recommended it, and I've been off pred for 7 weeks, imuran for over 5 months. Besides, even w/o those complications, do you want to catch the flu?

When you get your shot make sure it is not live-attenuated. You want one that has been fully killed just in case (though a majority of flu shots are fully killed).

didn't know I had a choice in the matter. thought the flu vaccine was practically a monopoly situation.. I recall hearing something a long those lines the last time a 'shortage' situation developed. Odd thing is, I was aware of the risk of 'live' virus shots simply because a black labrador retriever I once owned developed 'AIHA' after her shots. Barely survived.. totally crippled by the treatment and recovery. anyway, from that point on, I tried (in vain) to opt for 'non live virus' shots for my pets. Typically vet's don't stock them, as there is no demand, and they claimed that getting them in for a single animal was too impractical.. Literally i'd have to pay for a case to offset their risk no one else would opt for them... as they were low demand, and as a result, higher cost.

Anyway, back to the human side of this equation. I only know of two 'brand' names of flu vaccines, and i've only ever seen one distributed in this part of the world. I'll raise the point with my GP next visit, see what he has to say about it
