Ok. Just thought I would ask about foods that cause your IBD kids problems....spices, drinks,....whatever...

Ryan has been doing fine until....I made a beef pot roast last week. His tummy was pretty upset. I was hoping that in doing well he could handle it, but NO!

Looks like no beef around here. Dang...I am getting sick of chicken!

We are still working our way through figuring out what we need to avoid but right now Ellie seems to do better without any raw veggies, no fruit skin and no red meat.

My two have issues with red meat and oils but I put most of that down to surgery. They can otherwise eat whatever they wish and not have issues, although both certainly have preferences for certain foods and I do think that perhaps their body is comfortable with those choices.

Not really sure, we haven't really had issues. Saying that we tend to cook all veggies, peel fruit and have white bread instead of brown.

Dusty, Ryan hasn't had any surgeries, but red meat is definitely a no-no for him. I guess it's just so hard to digest. That and dairy seem to be the worst. The raw veggies too, but sometimes he can eat a salad and he is experimenting with 1/2 apple sometimes.

We never found any correlation...have tried eliminating everything but chicken and processed white foods, and have also tried Paleo. I even let her have popcorn now.

Stephen's never had any problem with food but we've avoided seeds, fruit/veggie skins (he eats few fruits/veggies by his pickiness anyway...), nuts, popcorn...

But, a few days ago, he went out with friends to a Chinese buffet and said lots of the food had seeds in it... as he's never had any problems before, he said he decided to just go with it (unusual for him because he's usually very responsible re the seeds, etc.) and then that afternoon/evening he felt crohns-related 'off' and a bit/specks of blood when he had a BM the next day. It was only the one afternoon and the one BM but very coincidental it was when he knew he'd eaten 'lots' of seeds.

Our gi told us no nuts ( DS is allergic so no biggie) seeds or skins or popcorn.
We have been a avoiding beans and higher fiber foods just because he had unknown abdominal pain maybe after a few months then we will try those again.
He was in pain daily for so long it was hard to tell if anything was really making any difference .

C hasn't complained about any foods since he has had no symptoms. When he was flaring and before we started MTX there were certain foods he would avoid but they were odd selections of food so I never really got to the bottom of whether they bothered him or he used it as an excuse to not eat them. He read IBD'ers should avoid lettuce and so he did for months then one night he ate a salad and it didn't bother him so he added lettuce back in. It's really weird how he stuck to that rule since there are others that he ignores completely! Red meat doesn't seem to bother him at all.

When my son was having pain regularly I did extensive food journalling to try to get to the bottom of what foods should be avoided. I never got a clear picture of what the bad foods were as there were often times when some foods would bother him and then he would eat them again and it would be fine. It was very frustrating. Some of the most likely culprits were raw apples (especially with skin) and red meat. Oddly enough though ground beef seemed ok as long as it wasn't a fast food burger or one of those frozen hamburger patties.

When he was having near daily pain I did lots of reading on diet and IBS and one of the most helpful things I read suggested being careful to mix insoluble fiber with soluble fiber and to be careful of the amount of insoluble fiber you ingest at one time. So for example, if you are going to have a raw apple don't eat it on its own on an empty stomach but eat it with a slice of bread. The soluble fiber in the bread is supposed to cushion the insoluble fiber in the apple and make it gentler on the digestive tract. Since we have been following this my son has been able to eat raw apples again. We started with just a slice here or there and always peeled and we are now up to a whole peeled apple as long as he also has something else with it. I'm not brave enough to try raw veggies yet and somehow my son isn't broken up about this. :ysmile:

Almost forgot, we also thought carbonated beverages were a problem. When he had pain it was often associated with gas so we figured why ingest gas on purpose. Luckily my son likes iced tea about as much as pop so it wasn't too hard to get him to give up pop. I have let him have small amounts of pop now that he is feeling quite a bit better and it seems ok.

I'm currently hoping that Christmas dinner won't be a problem...

My daughter has problems when she eats fast food (greasy burgers, or pizza) and ice cream. She has no problem with raw fruit and veggies, but if she eats too much watermelon, she is in agony. She can eat watermelon, just not a lot of it. If we make home made pizza, she is fine.

I forgot to add, the first time we did the restricted diet it seemed to work...symptoms GONE. THe second time...nothing. Her doc told me this can be "normal" for these kids. BUT I have a friend with UC (on Asacol only for 5+ years) who eats junk food (tacos, burgers, doughnuts) to avoid a flare (fruits/veggies give him pain).
