genetic markers for Crohn's found

not sure if you guys and gals have seen this yet.. thought i would post it.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19074222/wid/11915773?GT1=10109

take a look. there are 3 new regions on some chromosomes that scientists have identified that predispose us to Crohn's. they say it is probably a genetic mutation of the autophage process and intestinal bacteria related. perhaps we will get some more answers soon.

So now they've found it, or part of it, let's now come up with the gene therapy to fix it! Go team!

ever since i was diagnosed a few weeks ago i have believed that it could be an inherited disease, considering that my mum has it (got diagnosed 30 years ago) and her father had colitis, but considering that they didnt know that much about it when her father died,he could of easily had chrons.

i just hope that if i have children they do not have it, but at least i know what to look out for with them, and tell them what to look for themselves

Hi Kskitt, as you've only been diagnosed a short time and you are in the UK, did you know that the NACC has really friendly helplines and a quartely newsletter and so on?

It's the National Association of Colitis and Crohn's, and you can become a member easily.

I f you did know and already are a member already I'm sorry! But some other UK forum readers here may pick this up, so it may be of help. The url is http://www.nacc.org.uk/content/home.asp

(Incidentally, the newsletter that came last week had an article about the gene breakthrough).

If it's a genetic link, then unfortunately I will still be confused. No one in my family had even heard of Crohn's until I was diagnosed with it.

Hi Laura- I have no family members with Crohn's but my sister and niece have rheumatoid arthritis and so did my grandmother. That's a similar auto immune disease and the drug treatment is the same in many cases (prednisilone and /or azathioprine).

Have any members of your family had or have R.A.?

as with laura, no one in my family has ever had a link with IBD..im the first with crohns or even bowel problems period

i think what it is,is that we have the gene running through our family, but there has to be something to trigger it,such as an infection or something similar.I am only guessing

I only know one person in my extended family (my dad's cousin) who has Crohns, but my Mom got arthritis when she was 20, my Dad has hiatal hernia and Diverticulitis. my brother and sis on Dad's side have digestive problems from time to time as well.

Being predisposed is part of getting IBD, the other part is the trigger, which they still have to identify many of them, so far to date smoking for crohns is one known trigger, that includes second-hand smoke. Stress is one known trigger directly linked to UC as well as quitting smoking.

:)
