So i'm gonna start taking Imuran on Monday, and i'm a little nervous about it. I'm perfectly fine right now (energy and appetite are great) besides 1-2 fistulas, but knowing imuran is a really strong drug, i'm kinda anxious. But i was wondering what are some common side effects you experience in the first week or 2?

didnt have any (except the frequent blood tests), white cells went down a bit but that was it for me. Been on them for over a year and had no problems at all. Hope you get on with them as good as me

For me, I experienced fatigue and nausea(24/7 for awhile). My WBC count dropped to low also so I had to cut my dose back. Splitting the dose(taking a pill with each meal) made a huge difference on the side effects. It even helped with the fatigue.

not sure but i know weight depends on how much you have. im 11st so got 150mg, but they started me on 50 and slowly brought it up in 25mg iirc.

16, im sorry to hear that, not even drinking age yet :(

Well I'm 5'6 and 127 lbs. I'm pretty short for my age actually :S
Uhh i'm first starting at 50mg then moving on to 150mg if everything works well. Gonna do blood tests once every two weeks, then once a month...
Jeez i hope this thing will work, I literally have nothing going on except for those fistulas.. =_=

im only 5ft 8 at 27, find wearing high heels helps (but only on weekends).
Personally i think why worry, it may make it better, wont make it worse but you can change that so dont bother fretting about it, lifes way too short to worry about things like that. Really do hope it has some effect tho but remember if it doesnt theres plenty of other drugs around. Btw have you looked at your diet? many ppl find certain foods will cause problems. Very hard to tell what as each person is different, but may be worth looking out for anything that upsets u

if your on fb btw add me if you like.. wont be able to help you but i find its good to talk to others about crohns and see their lifestyles http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=608162748

I can eat virtually anything :p
I eat a wide range of foods including japanese, chinese, korean, western, junk food...
When I first had the disease (i was 13) my appetite was non-existent, but now i have a crazy appetite so I hope i don't lose it :S

teh i always get told i eat loads, think its cos i eat little and often lol. theres things that get ppl like corn (corn on the cob, popcorn) nuts, seeds, certain meats etc. All different so may be worth watching out for these (mines corn, wholemeal bread, kiwi fruit)
Wish i got to try all those foods, i lve in a small town in uk so if it aint britsh pub grub, mcdonalds, chinese or indian (not authentic btw) thats it. I love my food :)

So anyways, what are the most common side effects anyways? And which ones are temporary (managable), and which ones will require you to see a doctor or discontinue it? :O

sod knows, guess you know what feels ok, if it gets any worse tell the nurse/doc the next time you dee them, if its a rapid difference tell immediately.
I had a bit of pain a few mnths ago, not too bad so left it, got worse but not too bad, got even worse and i was thinking of ringing a&e, didnt but turns out it was FOC (full of crap) or constipation, very easy thing to fix but as i didnt tell them it caused me a hell of a lot of pain, not owrth being brave about it as i found out

Hi Rygon,
I have very little side effects myself (been on Imuran for 14mos). I did notice a few things....my pee became very very dark (and I wasn't dehydrated), I did notice my skin couldn't be out in the sun for prolong periods, as I'd get red patches on my chest and legs. Other than that, nothing really. My white blood cell count did go down, so I've been on 50mg for the past 10mos. The meds were fine with me, although in a flareup at the moment, so not sure what this means.

I actually caught less colds and didn't get the flu (like everyone and their mother did this year). I think I was more careful about washing hands, having hand sanitizer, etc. I also just lived my life as normal. Best of luck, hope you feel ok on it.

So I just took Imuran 2 hours ago..super nervous right now... I'm already stressed out with school (got a Bio final tomorrow, and currently have 2 textbooks missing..)
So i'm not in a great mood, not feeling optimistic. I was just wondering if i do encounter side effects, when will they occur? after how long?

I didn't have any side effects when I started taking Azathioprine (generic for Imuran). You are supposed to have your blood monitored on a regular basis, but for me that isn't always feasible. The only thing I have noticed about taking it is that the first daily urination after taking it makes the urine very vivid in color. But that's not bad.

That sounds very reassuring, I really hope that that's the worst for me...
I've had trouble with new medication in the past...usually causes nausea for me and loss of appetite. But thanks for the input!

I just got told I will be on Imuran as well, same kind of symptoms as TL here...except no solid diagnosis of Crohns...flipping Doc didn't even allow me to ask questions, I had to follow him in the hall before he scooted into another room!
Same Doc a couple months ago was going to put me on Remicade, thats what this visit was!
Now does Imuran let the fissures and fistulas heal?

Yeah apparently it gets rid of fistulas and all that jazz..
I'm only taking 50mg right now, i literally have no side effects which is a blessing.
Although i'm gonna slowly increase the dosage so I hope it continues to be this well...

Oh please don't be nervous! I took them for a few years when I was 11 or 12 and I was fine on them. No side effects or anything. If you are worried though, the side effects should be printed on the patient information leaflet that you get with your tablets.

Also to theVirginLarry, Azathioprine is the name of the actual drug. Imuran is just a brand name for it. :)

Hey Tragic,

Both my kids are on Imuran and from the word go neither have had side effects from it.

Sarah started on it when she was 14 and has now been on it for 5 years, 50mg all that time.

Matt (17) has been on it for 6 months and started at 50mg and was increased to 100mg after his op 9 weeks ago.

Dusty. xxx

Hey , I've been on it a few months (150mg) and it's not so bad , got a bit of nausea to start off with but not anymore , some joint pains (differs every day) Crohns is doing well though , well worth it :)

There are various definitions of the term generic...

1. The chemical name of a drug.

2. A term referring to the chemical makeup of a drug rather than to the advertised brand name under which the drug is sold. This tends to be how the medical profession refer to the term generic.

3. A term referring to any drug marketed under its chemical name without advertising.

4. I don't know about other countries but here Pharmacists tend to refer to the cheapest drug they have available, as the one prescribed, as the generic.

Dusty. :)

I'm on 250 mg's a day, I've noticed I'm tiring out rapidly when I'm doing work, had the worst headache ever today also, took 6 hours to subside...wondering if its the Imuran?

I've been on imuran for over 6 years now, started on it almost as soon as I was diagnosed - it has never given me any side effects other than a slightly low white count. It's been great for me :)

had to get my blood done today, 11 vials of it, some for the GI, some for my doc and 2 to Prometheus Labs for a Crohns test....

Alright thanks for all the input and advice guys!
I just started taking 150mg, and i've been on it for almost a month now :)
so far no side effects, thank God.

Been prescribed this drug today to mainly help my joint pain which i'm seeing a rheumatologist about very soon. My GT says it will help my crohns as well. Very helpful comments above as i too am worried about side affects because right now my pentasa doesn't cause any! Interesting comment from McStew re colds and Flu. I find that when i have a cold comming it triggers my crohns, so, im hoping Azathioprine will help keep colds at bay. I have flu jabs anyway so know probs their.

I have been on it for about 20 years and have had no side effects. I had some headaches when the dosage was increased, but not 100% sure if this was due to the Imuran. I take 100 mg twice a day (200 mg total.)
