ok just had a sm bowel follow through and the x-ray tech. had to go get the dr to lok at something he did a bunch of picts and said the barium was just hanging out in the cecum and then 2 min. later it went all the way around my lg. bowel what the heck does that mean???My dr is out until Mon. and its driving me crazy not knowing.please help again.thx all!:rof:

A small bowel follow through shows images of the small bowel however it sounds like it shot through your system like a rocket and went straight to the large bowel. After drinking the barium they usually wait a bit before taking x-rays to see if the barium has coated the small intestine far enough to start taking multiple x-rays. Sounds like your system is working faster than most and by the time they waited to take images, the barium was well on its way to the exit where with most people it might just be starting to enter the small bowel. Hopefully they still got some good images and you'll get some answers soon. Keep us posted! :)

Hi Crabby no it didnt move through fast I was there 3 hrs they started taking picts every 20 min. and they after my first hour they did them every 30 min.
after I waited the 30 min. for the 2nd time he took a pict. came back and did another one and then came back and said he had to get the dr. He came in and said the barium had stopped and was pooling in the cecum.by the time he got there it had gone all the way through the lg. bowel.so I dont know why it was pooling in the cecum for so long before it blasted though my lg. bowel.

Ah I see. Could be a narrowing there but I'm sure the test results will show what happened. Keep us posted. :)

OK just a follow up of whats been going on with me: my GIs nurse calls me with the results of my sm. bowel follow through and tell me it came back normal but my white blood count has risen yet again now it 15.76.so the GI wants me to be seen at the university hospt. In Iowa city for more testing as to why I still am having D and cramping and a pain in my right side...Just what I wanted to hear.argggggggg. more testing.please let them find something soon I will be living on the streets with all these medical bills piling up..:ybatty:

Wendell, it sounds like you have a bit of a stricture there if it sat in your cecum so long. And of course going through your large bowel that quick is no picnic. I know this from experience! 8 minutes from mouth to bag for me. Yup, the record holder at the L&D hospital. I waited patiently for my trophy but it never came! :yfaint:

I hope your GI gets you sorted ASAP too.

One thing I was thinking when you said that the barium just kid of pooled in one area was that maybe it was just your motility. It could be that your perastalisis( movement) of the intestines was just erratic at the time or sluggish. I have upper gut motility issues( was dx back in 2005). I had a test, think it was called a small bowel manometry test. They said that my small gut movements were abnormal. I had this tube in my nose that went down to my small gut for this test. Well I went home for 24 hours with a recorder recording all my activity in my small gut ( like when I ate or when I was asleep etc..). Well I remember the GI doc telling me that when I was asleep my small intestines were like having a lot of movement( which it should not be since I was not eating). Then there was times after I ate where it was not moving like it should or it would be erratic and not coordinated.

Anyhow, this could be what happened to you, maybe your gut just stalled for a bit in that area. I think they would have seen if there was something abnormal ( or at least I hope they would have). I would personally talk to your GI again and ask him/her what they thought happened when the barium pooled in the intestine..

thx for reply ihurt,i am going to do something because after my 2nd colonoscopy my insides really hurt.Something has got to be wrong and hes not finding I guess thats why hes sending me somewhere else.Time will tell and I will get some answers.thx for the support.hugs!

Thats how my first study went. And the second...........

I had maybe three drinks of that junk and I was telling them I gotta go like right now. Ha! said the tech it can take hours! I asked him how lucky he was feeling! He showed me the bathroom and 20 min later was Dx with Crohns.

BTW- the first time I went through all this- ALL my other tests were negative. Happened again last Feb when I was iven another study only this time I had 5! people in the radiology
watching me throw it all back up. Kept enough down to show my trouble. Again alot of tests were negative.

Good luck- listen to your body and you will find some help soon!

Thanks for all the support,I was diagnosed with Crohns after my first colonoscopy, then went for the 2nd one 5 mths later and he said it wasnt as bad as he thought,so the asacol is improving things in my lg. bowel. He dosent want me on predisone due to the side affects and Im diabetic but there has got to be something he can give me to settle down my stomach troubles.all my blood work comes back normal except my wbc its elevated yet.I only have 1 GI Dr in town so that kinda sucks that I have to travel 1 1/2 hrs to get to the university, but it will be worth it if they can tell me whats all wrong.Thx again...Wendy:ghug:
