Ok so my dr today said that my hair loss is due to the asacol which I've been on since june and reccomended I shave my head and start fresh! Ugh. So has anyone else experienced hair loss with asacol??

Annnd. Right now I am having very sharp pain in my right side near my hip that goes a little to my back. Its soo bad and it'll come for a few seconds and then stop and go again. Any idea on what it could be???

I have lower-right pain frequently as well, although I'm undiagnosed so I can't say what it is or if my pain is caused by the same thing as yours. I know that my pain is worse when I'm in a flare or when I eat something that I shouldn't have, or when I'm constipated. I hope you feel better soon.

What kind of a doctor actually tells someone to shave their head?? That's horrible! At least they could recommend you to a good wig-maker or rogaine or something? I hope you are able to figure out a better solution than shaving it all off.

As for the pain - have you been checked for kidney stones? Flank pain, radiating ...coming and going...could be a stone working its' way through.....

I am not an expert on this but I think air loss is due to malabsortion.
Vitamins could help you on it.

I am not sure on the pain.

For the hair loss maybe look into getting extensions to help fill it in while it grows in? The clip in kind or the ones they put in, clip ins are A LOT cheaper, but more work. If you go that route, take the set to your hairdresser so they can cut them to match your hair.

I also lost alot of hair while on Asacol. I asked my Dr about it and he said he wasn't sure if it was from the Asacol or not, but I asked him if I could try something else since I had read that other people had hair loss while on it so he let me. He put me on Lialda and shortly after that I stopped losing my hair. Maybe ask your doc to try something else.

Wow, easy for your doc to say "shave it all off!" If Ii had to do that, I would get all sorts of cool wigs like Samantha did on Sex and the City when she lost her hair due to chemo.

I agree that malabsorption could also be a factor - get your levels checked, including iron - and see if you are low on anything.

I guess the bottom line is that you have to weigh whether the Asacol is working for your Crohn's and how important that is compared to losing your hair.

Good luck! -Amy
