Hair loss while in remission?

Hi,

I'm a 24 year old Crohn's patient---extremely lucky to have been in remission for just about a year! I had a good amount of hair loss during my last flare but kind of attributed it to the combination of steroids and just my body being unhappy. As my symptoms started getting better, my hair stopped falling out.

Now, I'm noticing a lot of hair loss again, but it's puzzling me because nothing has changed. I am on 6MP and remicade but have been on both for over a year My current hair loss began about 2 months ago. I can really tell that my hair is thinning!

Has anyone else had this happen kind of out of the blue? Any tricks to make it stop? I know this is such a little "problem" compared to what we normally go through with flares...but it's still somewhat bothersome!

I recently read, in another thread, that anemia can cause hear loss. I'd suggest getting blood work done tosee if your low in anything.

Hey there...congrats on the remission! I'm 1 1/2 years into my first remission as well. What medications are you on?

I currently live with hair thinning which began when I first got sick and has gotten worse due to certain crohn's medications I am on. When I was able to lower the dose of my medications, the thinning slowed and my hair KIND OF started looking fuller again.

I take 6-mp and Asacol HD, both medications known for hair thinning and hair loss.

Vitamin deficiencies can also be a likely culprit. Make sure to talk to your doctor about it if it is becoming a big concern to you. They can do blood testing to check all of your levels as well as help you determine if the medication is probably the culprit.

Since I upped my dose of Remicade, my hair is falling out like crazy. Price of IBD I guess.

I had this happen to me a few months ago; I got blood work done and ended up being diagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis. So I would just make sure it's not something else. It could also be anemia. Or it could just be your medications, depending on what you're on.

thanks everyone for your replies! I am on 6MP and remicade. I know that both can cause hair loss, I've just been on both a lot longer than since my hair started falling out, which made me wonder if it is something else. I will definitely look into getting some blood work done! Thanks all!
