This may seem a funny question, but-
I've recently been having particularly severe 'constipated diarrhea'. Sometime liquid sometime more solid but always a real strain to get it out! I think I pulled muscles in my neck doing it as its been hurting some for a few days now. Anyone else had that? In the greater scheme of things its not really a massive problem, I know, but was just curious to see if anyone else strained themselves like this.

All you can do for the muscles is to keep them relaxed for awhile. I wonder if you have a constipated blockage. Have you considered Mirilax or a laxitive to clear yourself out? I know laxatives and Crohn's don't usually go well together but maybe it'll clean out the hard solid so you can go easier and not tense your muscles so much.

I actually have both right now myself - the "constipated diarrhea" (specifically, I feel constipated and I'm bloated & distended, but when I go, it is loose and sometimes watery). And I seem to have a pinched nerve (?) in my neck/shoulder blade area. I'm in a flare which would explain the constipation/diarrhea, but I'm not sure if my neck pain is related or not. I've had recurrent pain off and on for awhile now that feels like it's probably a pinched nerve. I realize this isn't very helpful, but yes, I am in a similar boat right now!

Well I've had terrible knots in my shoulders and that area but now my neck feels a bit painful. It seems logical that it would be the diarrhoea though/ it can be a real push! Haha. Thanks for the reply.

It really wouldn't surprise me if your neck soreness is from spending time on the toilet...I think at some point most IBDer's experience similar "injuries". The best thing is to rest, and if it doesn't get any better see your GP or maybe a chiropractor.

Happens to me all the time. I don't think it is necessarily a strained muscle (although it could be). When things like this happen to me, I am usually in a flare..which means likely my whole body is flaring..and me legs, hands, back, shoulders everything will hurt as I strain because my entire body is so inflamed..I would say take a hot bath and try to relax all your muscles and joints!

I've been recently experiencing this. I am just (hopefully) getting over a flare up, but it may also have to do with a major change in diet, and less exercising (latter due to the flareup). I am hoping to get back to my routine, and see if that will make any difference. It's annoying, especially if it affects you in the middle of the night - I do kind of enjoy sleeping every once in a while :p

OK, it's good to know this is par for the course. I had a seton put in on Thursday and haven't had a proper BM since Wednesday night so I'm straining for one and hurting my neck even more. Think I'll try a heat pad. Hope you get over your flare-up soon! :)

I take back my Mirilax comment. I have been trying the prune nectar and orange juice morning routine from Breaking the Vicious Cycle website. Under knowledgebase and constipation. Even if you're not eating SCD, it really seems to be helping.

No straining.

For a long time, we had to keep my son on a half dose of miralax everyday. Since it is a powder and not a pill, you can adjust the dose to exactly what you need.
