Has anyone used LDN after a resection for a maintenance drug?

My wife will be having a resection soon to remove 8 inches of TI and valve. The GI is pushing for her to get on humira right after the surgery so this will not happen again. She has the fistulizing crohns and is battling a abscess in the pelic reagion right now. My question is has anyone had success using LDN after a resection and maintianed remission without other drugs?

I am only a few months out from surgery, and I am on LDN therapy. It hasn't put anything into remission, and it's too soon to tell how successful it is yet.

I will say that my symptoms have been at a minimum, and that I would try LDN before any of the biologics. That is just my opinion.

I had an emergency resection in Aug2011, removed 8 inches of ilium and 3 inches of colon also cut out my Ileocecal valve and appendix. Reason for surgery was severe crohns flare that resulted in a perforated bowel and I was already going septic.

I have refused all immuno suppressants, I have gone through 5 Prednisone cycles and Asacol/mesalamine. I have been on LDN at 4.5mg nightly for 7 months. My latest colonoscopy shows major improvement in my crohns, and i have not had a flare up since the surgery. LDN is my ONLY Crohn's medicine, I take Cholestid to control the bile/diarrhea due to the absent Ileoceacal valve.

So in my case/situation LDN has absolutely worked after a resection. I will be having a 2nd surgery (strictureplasty) for a stricture that formed between the surgery and starting LDN (it was noted on a CT and colonoscopy prior to LDN). Your case may not be the same but LDN works for roughly 83% of the people who try it. My only side effect was the sleeplesness for the first month.

My last (and hoping it stays last forever) operation they took out 1 1/2 feet. Before LDN came along. If LDN had happened for me sooner, I might have been spared the surgery.

Yes, I've had 5 small bowel resections, and I've been on almost every drug available. I'm taking LDN, probiotics, and staying on gluten and dairy free diet. I had my 1st solid BM in 36 yrs this week, and no side effects, unless you count waking up a couple times during the night, and going right back to sleep a side effect.

I would say it's definitely worth a try.

I had nearly the same surgery about 8 yrs ago. I probably had 10 cm of terminal ileum but I think my valve is still there. I took metronidazole (spelled wrong likely--it's some strong antibiotic for healing the gut safely post surgery) for a couple weeks, then azathioprine and pentasa for a little over a year before tapering off over a couple months. At the time, my only serious inflammation was what was removed. I just stopped going to doctors because my disease didn't get noticeably better or worse in that year, to year and a half, before tapering off on my own.

I would NOT recommend others doing so unless they know the state of their inflammation, and whatnot, and are dedicated to keeping a food diary and sticking to some sort of testable plan. Communicate to some impartial, caring third-person at all times. Don't be afraid to admit you might be wrong. For a cursory overview, checkout my rather outdated post at the Success Stories>MY Supps for MY Dis-ease section.

Anyhow, I've been on LDN--mainly for reoccuring joint pain--for 9 months or so but it doesn't seem to be helping in that department. Digestion-wise, LDN seems to just be keeping me at the same state, symptom wise, as before--which may or may not mean it is "working". My main problems are when I stop eating real, whole foods or combine certain foods, or drink caffeine, or stop taking fish oils or good probiotics.

If your wife doesn't have active Crohn's otherwise, and she's pretty concerned, I would perhaps ask for other opinions. Personally, I've never had that aggressive of a case of crohn's and am not sure if women react worse or have better/worse success with meds. I am not sure, but I bet others have unqualified opinions on the subject, also....

I had ileostomy removing about 5 inches of terminal ileum and a little of colon in June 2011. Have not needed any medication since (was on Pentasa for 3 years before). Plan to have ileostomy reversal surgery in a couple weeks to get rid of stoma and bag. MD wants me to go on immunosupressant. LDN sure looks good to me. Suggestions for educating my doctor? Other ideas? Thanks.
