My daughter was diagnosed with Crohn's in Dec. 2013. The doc wanted to put her on med but my husband and I managed to keep her off the typical Crohn's med so far, fighting with the doctor and stressing on food. She has been suffering from flare ups every now and then and is being treated with Flagyl. When having a flare up she is put on Flagyl for a month and it seems to work for her.
We are big on healthy eating, organic food, grass-fed products, and juicing. Since her diagnosis, we experimented with different diets and ended up with SCD diet (grain-free, sugar-free, lactose-free). After putting her on SCD her flare ups are lot less frequent than before. This time she was symptom free for over 3 months. She's back on Flagyl from yesterday.

Hi. I don't have any experience with the SCD diet. There is a section in here. I am not sure of the exact name but it is something like Diet, Nutrition and Supplements. They do have subforums on both the SCD diet and juicing.

Sorry to hear your daughter was diagnosed with CD.I know we are all different and I find I benefit from the SCD.Here is a link to the SCD/Paleo support group Ron suggested. http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=48313 Diet is an energetic topic between crohnies. What works for some may not work for others.I do believe diet is a tool we can use to fight this disease. When I have strayed from the SCD is when I can tell it works for me.I find it a challenging diet to follow, since you make just about everything you eat.It does take commitment.Elaine Gottschall has been quoted "Better to spend your time in the kitchen than in the bathroom." My wife and I change 'bathroom' for 'hospital' when we think of the quote.

I've read that in smaller studies the SCD helped, in one manner or another, around 60% of those that followed.

Saw the other week a larger study to test the SCD diet on those with Crohn's was approved for funding.

One of the leaders in using dietary ideas to treat Crohn's patients is Dr. John Hunter of the UK. His program involves looking for trigger foods. He recommends a liquid diet for a period of time, then working with a dietician to introduce and figure out which food(s) is causing problems. He claims about a 90% success rate with the program, with around 50% able to resume a normal diet after a few years.

The DailyMail also ran an article on how his program works for those with Crohn's disease. The article can be read here:

When we feel helpless, it's good to know we are not alone. Staying on SCD can be very challenging, specially when preparing school lunch. My daughter's negative attitude towards the diet doesn't help either. But we are not giving up. I would rather spend my evenings in the kitchen than send her to the doctor.
Thanks for sharing.

We are new on SCD also. The book Breaking the Vicious Cycle and online research have kept us going. Thank you for the info.

Thanks for the web sites. We need as much info as possible on SCD. We truly believe the diet can help our daughter (although she hates it).Eager to explore the sites.
