My doctor is German and couldn't remember the name in English. It's a barium test but with an NG tube? They think this will be better than an MRI but I'm not exactly sure why. My blood test don't show significant inflammation but I suffer from strictures and have had 3 surgeries. I haven't been feeling well, very little appetite and nausea lately.

Has anyone had this test and can you tell me how it went? I really don't want an NG tube :frown:

Hi yes i had that test. Heres how it went for me. The day before they prepd me , the day of the test you just swallow the tube mine had a baloon which they pump up while doing the barium and doing xrays at the same time, but because i could not handle it through my mouth they gave me some kind of sedation and entered it through my nose which i could not feel at all. Its not that long of a test and not that bad

I hope you feel better soon . There is a specific section on here called Tests for IBD. Have you had a fecal calprotectin test which measures inflammation?

Upper GI follow through I believe is what it was called when I had it. This was the final test in my diagnosis. I know how you feel about NG tubes. I have a really rough time with them. Mine was kept in for the duration, but it was almost 30 years ago. Maybe the procedure has changed a bit. It will likely involve you rolling around on the imaging table a bit to help the barium move effectively. I was allowed to watch the monitor and it was pretty easy to see the strictures when they showed up. It made me forget about the whole tube down the nose thing for a few minutes.

Not pleasant, but it doesn't last too long in the grand scheme of things. If it helps you get the treatment you need so you don't require an NG tube post surgery I think it is a fair trade off. Keep us updated and don't hesitate to ask questions if you have them. Good luck.

An mre ( MRI with entography ) has replaced the upper Gi with small bowel follow through
They use this routinely with children

Ds had a upper Gi with small bowel follow through
It showed nothing
But the mre showed the inflammation in Ds terminal ileum

I have had the best luck with getting a diagnosis by a small bowel series and a CT scan with contrast.

Most of the time all my other tests are normal. Yet I still have CD.

Good luck, I hope you get answers soon!

Lauren
