My 14 yo daughter was diagnosed with crohns when she was 9... We were in remission for 5 years which was heaven! Recently she started to get pain in and around her bottom, and to cut a long story short, she has 2 fistula's (one superficial, and the other which was drained and a seton put in place) the thing I am worrying about is that her procedure was a week ago now, and she is still in a great deal of pain, can hardly move, won't or can't sit down and will only wee and poo in the shower. She is very down and says she hates her life. I try to stay upbeat, and keep telling her that it will get better... but when??? I can't bear her in pain, its like a knife going through me, but when does it start to get better? I must admit that she is moving around better than she was, but she has 'given up' a little bit. Help!!!

Hi, as the fistula and abscess were drained under anaesthetic, other than pain relief, there is no treatment as such, she does still have the drain in place, but otherwise its just steroids and her usual azathioprine. She is keeping it clean, and the nurses have said that it appears to be healing well. Thanks for your reply. :)

Hopefully now that its draining and with the prednisilone to reduce the inflamation the pain will ease.

I'm sorry your daughter is suffering so. I hope she gets relief soon! I'm sorry but I don't have any experience with fistulas.

Im sorry your Daughter is going through this with theses horrid fistulas. My 10 year old son had a small op for a fistula he had few years ago but his was left open and treated with medical manuka and it healed wonderful. I did think he had another last november so was taken into hospital to investigate and turned out to be a fissure which they cleaned out and we now back on the manuka again. I really hope your daughter gets some ease very soon, its just awful watching them in pain. Hugs. xx

Sorry to hear she is struggling. My son had a peri-anal abscess that was agony last year but after the surgery to drain it and remove dead tissue he was actually better because there was very little pain. He now has a fistula that is causing no problems. I would phone the nurse or doctor and ask how long the pain should last for. The manuka honey worked well for us to help heal.
Try give pain relief every 4 - 6 hours so that the pain doesn't have a chance to build up. Hope it eases off soon

Hey my boy suffers terribly with fistulas and abscess his lasts as 20 days ago and he gets them every 5 to 7 weeks and has done for nearly 4 years we use sumo ram but we also have used a cream u use on piles it has an anaesthetic effect and reduces swelling we use it last time with his antibiotics and he didn't t need to go in hospital he has used everything from GT cream to vasaline as well has having the fistulas layed open and abscess,s drained, Lewis never got any relief from siting in baths as his are blind so you can't place a Sefton in his apart from the last one we thought it had made a n end to the surface but it was a pimple lol ...after Lewis had a surgery last September r it restrained some bacteria and the pain was immense so we had to put him on a 10day course of cipro and metronidazole maybe she needs some needs to Leo clear any infection that might of gatherd or lingered. .

Hope she gets some relief soon nothing worse than a pain and she can't get comfy .xx
