Does anyone suffer from frequent heartburn? Is it related to crohn's?

My doctor told me to use a medicine (here in Lebanon it's called Pariet; it's a proton pump inhibitor). I use it on and off, but I don't want to add more meds to the ones I already take for Crohn's.

Any tips on how to relieve heartburn. Thanks

Hi,
I get heartburn once in awhile...especially if I have eaten something that doesn't agree with the Crohn's.

My doctor gave me Ranitidine. I only need the one pill and it usually stops it right away. Mind you I don't get it that often.

I do believe it is because Crohn's can be found anywhere from the mouth down through the entire digestive system. I get mouth ulcers and eye infections as well.

Hope you get the heartburn problem solved soon.
Nancy:)

I am sorry but I don't suffer from heartburn.

I have always avoided spicy food, so I do not know if that had any affect on it.

There are loads of old family remedies for heartburn but I don't know if you get gaviscon where you live or pepto bismol. They worked for me when I suffered from it.

gaviscon is the job alright, when i get heartburn it's really severe and gaviscon the job for it!!

I was put on a protien pump inhibitor as well, for cramps and upper stomach pains mostly for me..
I dont like to take mine either for the same reasons as you, but my DR told me that if I wanted it to work, I had to take it consistanly, not just every now and then, and even to take it at the same time every day.. also on an empty stomach.
I suppose if your really suffering, maybe give the pills a chance. I think as far as crohns drugs go, they are extremely mild and safe as far as any ill side effects.

good luck with it.

I have almost constant heartburn. My thoughts (but mere speculation based on how I feel & what I know about my body): My belly is always bloated from constant big D. I think that the bloating puts pressure on everything above & causes digestive acids to back up. I can feel the heartburn from my diaphragm all the way up to my throat. Since I have to take ten to twelve Tums a day for calcium, I try to time that & take it when the heartburn is at its worst (usually during or right after eating.)

Hi

i get heartburn often i usually suck ice cubes it eases mine quickly, i watch my diet and find things like fibre trigger mine off

(((hugs))) hope you find something that works for you x

I like calcium enriched antacids -- tums -- it helps with some calcium replacement since I quit the milk (sigh)

Oh yeah, heartburn! Well, if I don't take prevacid every single day, after a few days it flares back up and it's excrutiating! My prevacid is prescription strength and sometimes I have to take it 2 times a day. I also have Barrett's Esophagus which is from having Acid Reflux for so many years and not being properly treated for it. But it all ties in with having crohns. So I've been told by my doctors anyways.

Before I got really sick with the crohns. I was constantly eating tums, taking pepto bismul and anything that I could get over the counter. Recent years I was taking high doses of prescription zantac but stopped it, don't remember why I did but I did. Long time ago!

So, my bad for not continueing on the zantac! But your doctor should get you on something asap cause heartburn can come from many things, including illnesses.

My doc gave me some prescriptions for this, but my insurance didnt want to pay and I dont have the energy to care..so I take pepcid daily, sometimes several times daily. otherwise I hurt terribly. Just one more fun thing ;P

When we didn't know what my condition was, and it was just steady nausea and discomfort in upper abdomen, and lots of bloating....my GP prescribed Prevacid. I took that until the Prescrip ran out, coincidentally one day before starting the pentasa prescrip from the GI, last Thursday. I've had increasingly bad heartburn and/or reflux for the last three days. It may be because of my food diary and that I am eating much smaller portions and probably a lot less food overall - funny how having to write down every little thing does that - but it may be that the Prevacid helped. Curiously, I've been eating lots of mandarin oranges since they go into the stores. Yesterday I didn't eat any and my heartburn was the worst it's been. Today I had two and both eased the heartburn a little....
Tonight it got pretty bad and I took Gaviscon and it really helped.

I get to see a GP tomorrow and will talk to him about it.
