I am new to this forum and wanted to introduce myself. I am 39 years old and was diagnosed with CD in March 2010, although the doctors think that I have had the disease since my late teens. After being diagnosed and fistula was found doctors wanted me to start Humira or Remicade. Wanting another child and not wanting to be on the meds while pregnant I opted for surgery instead. After healing from surgery last May, my husband and I have been trying to conceive again (we already have a beautiful 2 year old boy ) Well, after being unsuccessful and starting to flare again I had another colonoscopy which revealed moderate disease again but thankfully no fistulas. So now we are putting off trying to conceive and am starting Entocort & 6mp at the end of this week. Once the course of Entocort is done then we will need to make the decision whether to stay on the 6mp during pregnancy or go off while trying to get pregnant. If anybody has any thoughts on this I welcome the opinions. Although I am nervous about the meds I am looking forward to hopefully feeling good soon! Thanks for taking the time to read this.

HI JuJubee :) and welcome to the forum!
I'm glad you found this place...there are so many wonderful and supportive people here!

I can't really help you with the pregnancy and crohn's thing, but I'm sure someone will be along that can:thumleft:
There is a pregnancy and crohn's subforum you may want to check out while your are waiting.

I hope the 6mp works wonders for you and you begin to feel better quickly!

Hope to see you around

Hi and welcome! I have not had children, yet, but I hope to start a family within the near future, so I have really been doing my homework. First off, the most important thing is to be as healthy as possible when getting pregnant, ideally in remission. Then, most doctors/research suggests for the mother to remain on treatment through pregnancy. As far as 6mp, CCFA states:

"Immunosuppressive drugs such as azathioprine (Imuran®), 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP, Purinethol®), and cyclosporine A (Sandimmune®, Neoral®) have not been shown to adversely affect pregnancies when given in standard dosages for IBD."

However, I am concerned about being on treatment if/when I am pregnant, as well. It is a big decision to make. I wish you luck and hope you will get well soon and be able to expand your family!

Hi Juju and welcome!

It's a tough decision to make, whether to stay on meds during pregnancy. There is a section here on the forum for Crohns and Pregnancy where you might find some helpful info or post questions of your own, if you haven't already.

Good luck! - Amy

Hi Jill,
Thanks for the info, but when I check online it shows that 6mp is a pregnancy category D. What is difficult is that there is such conflicting information out there as to whether it is safe. GI says one thing and OB/GYN says another... will just have to keep on the research.
Take care,
Monica
