Hi all

A couple of weeks ago I started to get pretty bad abdominal pain. It really only came on after I ate something but got really bad. I went to hospital a few days ago as it was too bad to put up with. They did some blood tests and the inflamation markers were ok even though I had some pain when they applied pressure to my abdomen.

They gave me some buscopan saying I had bowel spasms and sent me home. Thankfully some of the pain is gone but it hasn't gone away

I still have some pain, bloating, constipation etc. I also can only really have a bowel movement if I take laxatives as it's too lazy on it's own. When I have a bowel movement it's the only real relief I have.

Does anybody have any ideas on what it is? I'm not due to see my G.I. again until late august and would like to sort it myself if I could. I've lost 7lbs in the last two weeks as I'm afraid to eat because of the pain. I'm taking prednisolone aswel thinking it will help solve the problem but so far no good

Any help is greatly apprciated
Thanks so much :)

Hi Joe, it is safer to try and bring your appointment forward. I am worried that you are relying on laxatives which can irritate your bowel. You need to get this checked out.

are you Crohns diagnosed ?
If you are - do you have a strictures ?

Dont wait too long, it sound like you are not in a good shape. If things are not improving dont wait till August ! You dont have to suffer that much !

I hope you get this sorted out soon. Feel Well.

Thanks very much for the reply. I was in hospital Monday and they said she might call me to bring my appointment forward but no call as of yet sadly

Yes I was diagnosed in October 2012 with a ct scan when I had an obstruction. The ct scan was the only test I've ever had as I'm afraid of hospitals and dread having a colonoscopy. Thanks so much for the reply. I've read about strictures but was unsure.

Honestly, colonoscopies aren't that bad and it is the only way to see what is happening inside. If you have a stricture, one treatment is balloon dilation during a colonoscopy. The drugs are good and you don't feel anything and it has worked for me in the past. Strictures won't respond to steroids as the bowel is scarred. Ring the hospital, don't leave it. Be careful of what you eat. Keep it light and avoid fibre.

I'm resigned to the fact that il need one now lol. Is it bad that I may have scarring? Part of the reason I stay away from hospitals is I hate waiting for bad news and can't deal with being kept overnight. Also is it ok to use some dulcolax until the department I need to speak to open again on Monday? I had been using the liquid stuff but an eight hour wait is too long with the pain

Do the hospital know you are taking laxatives? Are you taking any pain medication? If you want me to be honest, I think you ought to go to ER/A&E. It can be dangerous to leave these things. Where are you based?

I mentioned to them I was having trouble having bowel movements. I'm not obstructed because I am passing gas and it's a different, more sever pain if I am. I am in Ireland. Before they diagnosed my crohns they sent me home seven times from a&e saying I was constipated. Even if I was to go now it would be Monday before a G.I would see me. It's very backward here

Is the pain cramps and are they getting closer together? Do you feel sick?

No they aren't cramps, just more of an annoying pain. It passes after a couple of hours so it is manageable. No nausea either so that's what's making me think it's a stricture

You can have partial obstructions. Constipation is uncommon with crohns but there are people who suffer with it rather than diarrhoea. You just need to keep an eye on what is happening and take paracetamol for the pain. Pain is always a sign that something is wrong.

I have been taking sterioids, and had bowel sounds when they listened to my stomach so didn't think that was the cause of the pain either. Thanks very much for your replies, I really appreciate the input and the help you have given me :)
