Sorry for the late reply LostInNY.

Did you have a biopsy done near the submucosal lesion? Enlarged liver or kidney could be medication or IBD related. What tests did you have done to show the enlargement? Here's some reading regarding IBD and the "biliary system": http://www.ccfa.org/resources/liver-disease-and-ibd.html

Enlarged liver may not mean liver disease. Do you have any of the results/findings from any imaging tests?

Sorry, I am new to the forum and didn't see your comment till now. During the endoscopy/colonoscopy the GI found the lesion in his stomach. A week later (last week) the MRE showed the enlarged liver and kidney. Currently he hasn't been on any medication for over a year. The GI is setting up an ultrasound endoscopy and an appointment with IBD specialist and other stomach diseases. I'm a mess.

Hi LostInNY,

I’m so sorry to hear of all your son is going through. :ghug:

As Jennifer has said, there are are number of liver manifestations associated with IBD that have the potential to cause an enlarged liver. :( What did the MRE show as far as intestinal disease is concerned?

My daughter had an enlarged right kidney due to hydronephrosis, her disease was in the terminal ileum. Does your son have disease located there?
The enlarged kidney was caused by active inflammation in the Terminal Ileum causing the bowel to swell, the swollen and inflamed bowel then pressed against the ureter. The ureter is the tube that drains urine out of the kidney and down into the bladder. Because the bowel was pressing against the ureter it caused a partial obstruction which then meant the urine backed up into the kidney. This in turn caused the kidney to become enlarged.

I hope you soon have solid answers for your son’s issues and can get him feeling well and back on track again.

I hope the test goes well LostInNY. *HUGS* Keep us posted on the results. :)

Terminal ileum, chronic inflammation with Peyer's patch and chronic esophagitis. Right now the GI isn't telling me much. He went for the abdominal ultrasound today, but I don't know the results. The hospital just called and he is scheduled for the ultrasound endoscopy on the 17th for lesion in stomach. I'm very scared about this test. I'm out of breath and panicking with too much anxiety. I don't know how to remain strong. I can't sleep. I am so sorry for everyone that suffers with this disease. My heart cries for everyone and I hope things get better.

Sending hugs! I hope the test goes well and gives you some clear answers.

Thinking of you LostInNY and sending hugs and healing thoughts your way.

I wonder if the enlarged right kidney is related to inflammation in the terminal ileum as it was in our case. If so, and it is not a chronic issue, it should resolve once the inflammation is brought under control. I should mention that it was also noted on my son’s CT after diagnosis that he too had a degree of Hydronephrosis.

Peyer’s patch are an anatomical feature of the lower ileum. They are lymphoid tissue and so involved with the immune system. It is not at all unusual to see this noted in test results when there is inflammation in the lower part of the ileum which is where the terminal ileum is.
