Houston,
I am getting my wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday and I am a little worried about it all. I am worried that because of my lowered immune system that I will get an infection or that my mouth wont heal as fast or like it should. I know that the oral surgeon said that he would do what he could to help minimize the chance of infection, but I am just scared that it will happen and I can't not take my medicine because that would be worse. So I was wondering if anyone else had their wisdom teeth removal after being diagnosed and could tell me about their experience and how it was for them. It would be very much appreciated.

I never took Imuran, I would not know what to tell you as far a precaution regarding surgery. I know that with anti-TNF my GI had suggested me to skip a dose but I don't know if it worth doing such a thing with AZA since it's really not the same tyoe of delivery in your system... Have you discussed that issue with your GI? I assume that your oral surgeon will cover you with antibiotics which considerably reduce the risk of infections but I have to admit I really don't know much when it comes to imuran. Hopefully someone who got their teeth remove (while being on immunosuppressant) will be able to bring you better feedback!

Hi, There shouldn't be any issues, your dentist will probably give you antibiotics-one pill and good to go. Keep the packing in and moist, won't be hard at first you will bleed abit. I found trying to keep my tongue off the stitches the hardest, habit forming! lol Vitamins, good food (broth, soups, jello for the first couple of hours), rest and salt water gargle all help. Your dr can suggest the most appropriate pain meds if needed. Good Luck. It won't be near as bad as you are imagining now ;) Let us know how it goes.

I had my (last) wisdom tooth out while on Humira (last year). It healed just fine, no antibiotics needed, I was fine the next day. I did not even bleed that much during the procedure. Dont worry, you will be fine.

Whatever you do, after the surgery DO NOT drink anything from a straw. I was not told this when I had mine out and ended up with dry socket where they pulled the wisdom teeth.( that is painful!). Try not to worry, Oh and ICE works wonders for the pain. I used an ICE pack on my cheeks afterward and it really helped. I did not even need much pain relief. I think I took a couple regular tylenol the first day and that was it. You will do fine..

I'd ask your oral surgeon to confer with your GI. There are some antibiotics and painkillers he might try to give you that wouldn't be all that good for Crohn's Disease if they're not familiar with its intricacies.

I had mine taken out while on methotrexate and had no problems at all. It healed easier for me than for some healthy people I know.

Yes make sure you tell the oral surgeon that opiates are not good for you. They cause constipation which can be very bad for Crohn's disease and they usually prescibed these for dental work. You may have to settle for an over the counter pain medicine.

I got mine out right before I got crohns, I wouldn't be worried that much about it getting infected or anything because they sterilize everything 100%, other than that wisdom teeth isn't that bad. I had all four of mine taken out and I was fine within 3 days. Many people are different tho.

I hope it goes well and don't be that worried about it!

I got my wisdom teeth out yesterday and it went pretty well. So far everything is good, only one of my cheeks kind of puffed up and the other one is fairly normal. The pain was really bad this morning when I woke up, but my medicine helped with that. I am eating ice cream, jello, and drinking ensure. I would have thought that I wouldn't be hungry, but surprisingly I kinda am. So my choices aren't really filling, but I will survive.
