Hi All, just joined this forum hoping for some advice from the people in the know! I've had crohns since 2001 and over last couple of years had a bit of a rough time. Anyway had surgery for the 4th time back in March this year and felt really well for a while....sadly recent colonoscopy confirmed what I had feared the dreaded crohns was back. GI wants to try 6MP to start in January to try to get control of the flare up, my only concern is that i've heard it is similar to Azathioprine which I could not tolerate:thumbdown: Can anyone help with what to expect? There seems to a lot of mention of ulcers??? Just wondered what type of ulcers and also sickness etc. I would really appreciate some input. Thanks Guys x

From my understanding they see similar acting agents but people try the other if one didn't work so it may be worth trying.

Hello Sazzie! You're just down the road from me.

I'm trying 6MP too. They just doubled my dose to 100 mg. It's not without some side effects, but so far mine have been tolerable. Lets see how it goes with the higher dose. Thing is, without meds of any kind, or meds that arent as effective, your crohns will not stay in remission. So, you should give it a try at least.

Why is the GI waiting til January? (are you afraid you wont enjoy turkey??)

I had them all and within only a week they affected my liver... however have you tried Remicade? Humira? Best to hit it hard then back off or in conjunction with. Keep us posted.

Hi

I have jsut been on AZA had major probs then put on 6mp after first dose, i got bad sickness, sore throat, tummy pains. the drug is the pure version of aza. Its a process that the nhs has to follow so im told. hope this helps

Azathioprine is the pro-drug for 6-Mercaptopurine, which is metabolised into 6mp and something else - the inactive metabolite, which some people are allergic to.

And yes, the NICE/NHS protocol says you have to try all the cheaper drugs first before being approved for the biologics.

I agree with Pen. I would hit it hard and try Remicade. You should do Remicade with Azathioprine. This shows to have the best success. You could back off from the Remi after but that gets very scary because once you stop it may not work again. I know you may want to try protocol for cheaper drugs frist. I did for the first two weeks out of hospital and was flaring bad again and had to go back. Started my Remicade right after. Studies show that the top-down or Remicade and Azathioprine out of the gate is the best way to remission. It is on Mayo Clinic's site. Here is the link to an article. Dr. Sandborn is one of the top dogs on Crohns in the country. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3096114/ I hope I don't get in trouble for posting a link.

Sorry to hear that the Chroner is back. I am on 50 of the 6mp, soon increasing to 100mg.Recieved dx of AS last week. I have been on the mercaptopurine for 5 months and my blood work only reveals a slight decrease in my H&H, no reduction or increase in white cell count. Back pain as well as every other manifistation of Crohns is a side effect of the 6mp, so best advice: trial by fire. I wish you the best.

Thanks everyone it's reassuring to get all the info. Will give it a go and fingers crossed. We are practically neighbour's Terriernut! :lol2: The GI has done all the bloodwork last Thursday so is waiting to get results back before starting it so hence the delay. Going back Jan 5th so all being well will start then.

Hey Sarah! I'm a big pooch lover alright. Boxers are terrific!! Dogs keep me sane, as humans drive me insane! I think waiting for all the results is ok, as long as YOU are ok. 6mp takes awhile to kick in. (not the side effects, the RESULTS) Be careful over xmas! You can always PM me.

I want to say that people mostly ignore the problems occurs at small age, but good treatment can solve the problem totally. I can see in your posting that you suffering from crohns which is a new disease name for me but indeed I will give you suggestion to take full treatment.
