I'm going into hospital tomorrow to have an ileostomy.
I'm fine with having the stoma - I want to have the stoma. I cannot wait for the end to having so many painful hours in the bathroom, never knowing when I'm going to need it, whether I've finished, etc.
I don't mind having the surgery. I can cope with the pain and the recovering.
But I hate that I have to stay in hospital. I really can't stand it in hospital. I can't stand the boredom. I can't stand seeing other people be sick (I have life-long emetophobia - not good on surgery/gastro wards). I can't stand the lack of hygiene, the lack of privacy, the food. I can't stand missing my dog (she cries if she's not in the same room as me, she sleeps on my bed and I keep telling my mum she'll have to at least sleep in the same room as the dog while I'm away, but she's not thrilled with that idea). And most of all, I can't stand knowing how doctors can treat you however they like.
It's supposed to be three to four days in hospital. Usually I recover faster than the average patient and my surgeon lets me go home early. I'm still clinging on to the hope that he'll let me go home on the same day or at least after just one night, but I'm not sure that's likely.
