Hospital stay

I'm going into hospital tomorrow to have an ileostomy.

I'm fine with having the stoma - I want to have the stoma. I cannot wait for the end to having so many painful hours in the bathroom, never knowing when I'm going to need it, whether I've finished, etc.

I don't mind having the surgery. I can cope with the pain and the recovering.

But I hate that I have to stay in hospital. I really can't stand it in hospital. I can't stand the boredom. I can't stand seeing other people be sick (I have life-long emetophobia - not good on surgery/gastro wards). I can't stand the lack of hygiene, the lack of privacy, the food. I can't stand missing my dog (she cries if she's not in the same room as me, she sleeps on my bed and I keep telling my mum she'll have to at least sleep in the same room as the dog while I'm away, but she's not thrilled with that idea). And most of all, I can't stand knowing how doctors can treat you however they like.

It's supposed to be three to four days in hospital. Usually I recover faster than the average patient and my surgeon lets me go home early. I'm still clinging on to the hope that he'll let me go home on the same day or at least after just one night, but I'm not sure that's likely. :(

Good luck with your surgery - remember to follow orders, get up and walking as soon as possible to get things moving again, hopefully you won't have a long stay!

Do you have a computer/tablet to take with you so you can visit us?

Good luck UnXmas! Sending you lots of healing thoughts and big hugs and hoping for an uncomplicated surgery which kick starts you into remission and a speedy, uneventful recovery that has you back at home in your own bed soon!

Best of luck with the surgery, UnXmas! As for making the hospital stay easier, like Paso asked, do you have a laptop or tablet or even a phone that you can do skype on? If so, you could skype your family and "talk" to your dog that way, maybe that'd make you both feel a little better about the situation. (Apparently dogs can respond to skype - I saw a blurb in the news recently about a soldier who skyped during his overseas deployment, and his dog was so amazed and happy to "see" his human on the computer.) And surely you can bring some of your own snacks with you so that you don't have to totally rely on icky hospital food? And I know what you mean, I can't stand to vomit and I also cannot stand to see/hear others vomit - maybe headphones could help block some of that out?

Here's the article about the dog on skype. :)
