How anemic do I have to be to get a blood transfusion?

My doctor said my hemoglobin is 12, and I definitely feel the effects of it. It's going to get worse before it gets better. I'm taking iron pills, but I'm still having a considerable amount of bleeding. School starts next week so I was hoping to get a transfusion so I can actually walk around campus without getting tired and light headed. Do I just have to tough it out until I'm even more anemic, or what?

I think mine had been as low as 10 or 11.....and I've never had a transfusion.....but, it might depend on your doctor and your symptoms.....

mine has been as low as 6 and as high as 15. right now it is at 10. my rbc's are at 3.5 and hct at 29. I have had transfusions on the lower end, but where I am now, we will just treat with iv iron infusions.

Hopefully the iron pills will give you the added boost you need. It sucks to be light-headed and dizzy all the time. It gets harder to walk up and down stairs, and a simple thing like lifting a jacket onto your shoulders becomes a tiring task.

Good that you are keeping an eye on it!

Thanks for the responses. I see my GI in 2 weeks so I'll hold out until then and hopefully we can come up with something.

Anything below 8 is transfusion range. I was 8.8 one time and that's when I went to the ER and was diagnosed, they didn't transfuse me, but they said I was awful close.

I got 3 bags last time I was in the hosp - I was hovering between 6 and 7.

Right now I am hovering between 7 & 8 and my doc opted for iron infusion 1x week for 6 weeks.

I would prefer a transfusion -works faster. Right now I feel like I could fall asleep at any minute of the day.

Hope you start to feel better soon! - Amy

Mine was below 7 many times for which i was given iron infusions.
This went on for two years while the 'Dr' i was under stubbornly told me i had no exaccabation of CD.
When it was 7.2 i was told to have a blood transfusion by a Dr in A&E.
I refused it and told them i wasn't going home from hospital until they found out what was going on.After failed attempts with steroids 12 weeks later i underwent my 2nd resection.
I only ever saw the 'Dr' who was so badly wrong once again @ o/p clinic.
He wouldn't even look me in the eye.
He was too damn arrogant to apologise.
Rant over!!
