I was ill for a while at the beginning of jan (flu etc) and didn't really eat so I have lost quite a bit (almost a stone!) was just wondering how do put on weight, i've only seemed to put on 4lbs and although im still carrying some weight, i feel horribly thin and scared if i get a flare up i'll loose even more..so does anyone have any tips on whats best to eat to pile on the pounds (and yes, ive tried chips, crisps, mc donalds's etc)

Are you actually underweight?
I wouldnt worry too much about trying to put it on. I've learnt that weight is always going up and down with this. If you do flare again, chances are you would go on steroids and easily put it on.
I think you will naturally gradually put it on. I wouldn't advise eating a lot of fatty foods, they are high in calories but do have long term health risks.
It is possible to put on weight by eating healthily, as long as you are eating more energy than you are burning off. If you have a sedentry lifestyle this wouldn't be as hard. But if you are active it would mean that you would have to eat a lot!
Also, 1pound of fat is about 3500 calories! So that is how much extra you would have to eat in a week to put on 1pound a week. I think it will probably be a slow process, but how fast you put on will also have something to do with how much your body thinks it needs its extra fat. Like when people go on fad diets and lose weight really quickly they tend to put it on quickly as well!
Hope this helps?

I find the best thing to do is track your calories. Don't change your habits for a couple of weeks while you keep track of calories in and weight. This will give you an estimate of how much you burn in a given day. If your weight stays the same, increase calories by about 500/day is a good rule of thumb.
Also, fat has 9Cal/g while protein and carbs only have 4Cal/g. So eating fatty foods will put weight on easier, but like the above poster said, you're only hurting yourself in the long run. The most common recommendation i've heard is 20-30% protein, 20-30% fat and the rest carbs.

In terms of actual food, maybe try a meal replacement in between meals. I use Ensure plus, which pacts 355C in 250ml. I also drink whole milk when I can.

I'm kind of in the same boat as your right now, so maybe we can help each other out with tips..

What helped me to put on weight was avoiding grains, wheat, corn, rice, etc. I think that they were irritating my gut causing poor digestion. Since doing that a number of years ago I've put on around 30lbs. I also began weight lifting since my energy levels increased from the diet change, so that has helped also. It's good weight that I've packed on!

gracifer,
You could always supplement your diet with Enteral Nutrition, a form of liquid diet. See the Enteral Nutrition Sub-forum in the Treatment section.
