Just looking at the lighter side of life, I was thinking about how crohns has prepared me for parenting.

1) I always know where a bathroom is in the mall (shopping centre for the Brits :))

2) No problem in waking up at night going to the bathroom. I have had plenty of practice

3) Poop spills - hey call in the expert.

4) Your child has strange colored poop - and you thought Go-ghurt was good for them.

5) Child has a stomach upset - then you get worried.

6) Your child won't poop - you know many techniques to help

How has crohn's helped you in parenting?

I got to find out what it was like to take care of a baby when I had my ileostomy. ;)

No, seriously. Think about it. I had to wake up every three hours like clockwork (had 3 clocks set three hours apart) so I could empty the bag or it would fill up overnight and lose its seal and get poo all over. I had to always be aware of the thing to make sure nothing bad was happening to it. I had to keep it clean and empty it. I had to change it. Had to make sure I knew where rest stops or bathrooms were at in case of emergencies. I figured, if I could take care of an ostomy pouch then I could easily handle a baby. ;)

not really gonna get into this much, but when I had a daughter I was always nervous she was going to show signs of Crohns' and I was always trying to extra gentle with her belly and everything. I remember when her belly button was still a bit crusty when she was still new and it bled one night during me changing her diaper, I though CROHNS! and took off to the e.r. like a moron.
now I do plan to have a child again one day, but there's no proof that it could be passed along, but I'm extremely paranoid but want another chance at being a father.

Well, treating crohn's costs about the same as putting kids thru university. But in case no one's thought about it, I haven't convinced my crohns to move out just yet!

Yeah, I've heard two different sets of numbers.. one that says family members are at a 10 - 20 percent higher risk of developing IBD. Another, published by a writer in a paper (forget who, and which one - think it was posted here or on the CCFA) stated that those with a family history had a 10 times increase risk of getting IBD. now, one of these sets of numbers HAS to be wrong, a mistake, or a misquote. I wrote to the author at her e-mail address asking her to check her figures, or at least quote/credit the source, and heard absolutely nada back

I don't like it when people in the media: columnists, commentators, news folk, etc., toss off stories like this, throw out numbers, but don't list/credit sources.

I have Crohn's, my daughter has Celiac, one of my son's has Hidradenitis Supporativa, my other son has some stomach problems on occasion.

Coincidence? I don't think so. They are all related autoimmune diseases.

I have no doubt about a genetic link.

Sorry Dan to hear about your kids

I know I always talk about hoping that my daughter has inherited her Mothers teeth. Now I need to add that she has inherited her gut as well :)
