Hello to all, first thank you for any advice that you can share with me! Was just recently diagnosed with crohn's, 4 weeks ago. I have a colonoscopy and throat test as well in one week. Had upper GI and small bowel, Gastro won't say yes to crohn's till complete tho he's made it evident this is my condition. To sum it up other than the pentasa and diet recommendations, he's given me nothing else to work with. As I have been reading through the forum and other peoples stories I'm getting tons of info, and am confused about vomiting, some have stated when they vomited they went to the ER with obstructions. Are there other symptoms too I imagine? Is vomiting normal? How often? Thank you again

Hi and welcome

I'd never vomited before, but I did violently, projectile vomiting back in January. This wasn't normal for me, and I knew something was wrong! So I went to A&E, I was blocked.
My other symptoms were explosive diarrhea, high temp, chills and sweating, and excrutiating pain in lower right abdo right hip and lower back.
Have you got any of these symptoms other than vomiting?
If you have then my advice would be ER, yes
Other than that, call your doc, tell him about the vomiting
good luck

Every time Meg ate, she had terrible pain. Meg was vomiting every evening for two weeks, after a barium meal and follow through and a colonoscopy and endoscopy within two days, it revealed a 2mm stricture in her small bowel and Crohn's was confirmed. She lost nearly 2 stone in weight and was given Ensure milkshakes for 12 weeks until her surgery.

Thank you for replying, the vomiting isn't every day. I thought I was having an ok week, suddenly constant nausea, can't eat hardly, vomited this afternoon. Yes to lower right abdominal pain and in my back.no fever..But my normal morning diarrhea has stopped abruptly three mornings ago. I guess I just don't want to overreact since my testing is so close! I read about strictures on another thread. Scary I'll research more on that pronto.... But in all reading rarely is actual vomiting a persons side effects. Nausea though very common as well as my wieght loss n appetite loss.

It really just depends on what's normal for you. Sure there are tons of symptoms out there but that doesn't mean we experience all of them. For me, vomiting is not normal and the last time I vomited out of nowhere and not being sick with the flu, my mom took me to the ER and they found that I was in my second flare and needed treatment (high doses of Prednisone and changed some of my other medications). It may not mean that there's a blockage but there could be something else causing it that needs attention. Again if you have any symptoms that aren't normal or that increase, contact your GI and let them know and if you're really worried you can go to the emergency room which could help find the cause if not at least relieve some symptoms and also make you get a sooner appointment with your GI (maybe even move test dates forward you know?).

Thank you also for your suggestions, if my abdominal pain continues to worsen I'll likely be heading to a clinic at least.

When I'm flaring, I can't keep anything down. The pain caused by eating causes me to vomit. I think it may be caused by swelling but not too sure. I suffer from severe pain and vomiting far more than I do from Diarrhoea.

For Roo vomiting was normal, it was nearly always present along with the headaches and upper epigastric pain. When the symptoms became more regular, say weekly, it was always there. The thing that changed was she developed a fever, the vomiting became constant and the pain changed to her back and generalised abdominal pain.

I think the combination of no bowel movements and vomiting is something that needs to be checked out ASAP! It may be a partial or full blockage.

I have the same, vomit because of the pain. I have D rarely as well. Loads of pain and intense cramping tho.

As most peolpe here have said, I think with time you learn what symptoms are 'normal' for you, and then anything new triggers an alarm. Vomitting is certainly not and never has been something that I experience, that was until this week. I let it go for over 3 days and am now in hospital. Should have listened to my gut instinct that told me this wasn't my usual UC, and won't be ignoring anything new in the future!

When I'm flaring vomiting is a fairly regular occurrence. For me it's almost everyday in the morning.

I can go months without vomiting or have it several times (or the urge to at least) in a few days. In fact just this week, though perhaps that was down to taking aza on an empty stomach (never done this before).

But u have a stricture(s), and i may vomit without pain or any noticable change of my body, though other times i have the pain, the shakes, temperature etc.

Vomiting has always been a normal part of my CD symptoms. That and D with blood were a part of my very first flare-up. It gets worse during a flare-up but I have it on a regular basis in general, a few times every couple of weeks isn't rare even when I'm otherwise well. And I've never had an obstruction.

I hope your colonoscopy and throat test went well and you're feeling better.

Vomiting is fairly normal on my end, too. Right now I throw up at least 2-3 times a day, its getting old. A lot of people say that they only throw up with an obstruction.

When I am flaring I would at times vomit. I think it was due to being blocked in my small intestine. When it did happen, it was either while eating or immediately after eating. It did not seem to matter what I ate. I recently had surgery and got the diseased parts of my intestines removed. This has not happened since.

im not sure if it's "normal" or not. im still trying to adjust myself. but i have found that ever since they found my crohns i am very nauseous after i eat and i vomit after nearly every meal! probably not "normal" but has become normal for me.

I actually have not vomited much. On 2 occasions. A couple years back when I had my blockage that came on fast the pressure and the nasuea came but with not much coming up...
The second time was just a couple weeks ago....It was not normal for me. I knew something was wrong and of course I waited a few days where I was not able to keep anything down. On the last Sunday when the glass of water came up 10 min later I knew I had to call my doctor. I was told to go to the ER and I was kept for 6 days in the hospital. I had inflamation in an area where it has not been before like this. My stomach and duodenum. I have only been out a little over a week and it makes me nervous as usual when I feel not the ordinary every day pain in some areas.

Every day at least once when I am flaring. Can be day time... can be night time. Doesn't matter.

I just tapered off Prednisone and vomited every single day while on it.

Then I had a Colonoscopy on Friday only to be put back on it (and no blockages just severe flare and ulcers on upper and lower bowel).

I guess my answer is... vomiting can be normal. But you need to find out if it is normal for you in a flare. Trust your gut. Get it checked out if you think it is not within your "normal"

The only time I vomit is during the worst of the worst of flares. I've finally learned to stop eating the very second I feel that Crohn's style cramp, which keeps my flares from getting that bad. I do get nauseous though.

My doc's orders as per what's normal for me are to take my narcotics and Zofran. If I'm still in need a couple of hours later to take another dose. If that doesn't help get myself to the emergency room as it could be a blockage.

I've been to the ER several times in the past after hours of violent cramping and vomiting but never had a blockage. My point is you can feel as if you're at death's door but still have no blockage.

I vomited earlier, we had Christmas dinner at work and I don't know if I ate too much too fast or if there was something in it that didn't agree, but I had a cup of coffee after and it made me sick. But I felt much better after, and it wasn't projectile or anything, so I'm not too worried. But (TMI coming up!) it didn't look much like what I'd eaten, and it was only an hour after I started my dinner, maybe 15 minutes after I finished so shouldn't it have been somewhat recognisable?

When i'm going thru a flareup with a blockage, I seem to end up vomiting -- my guess is that if the food can't go down, it decides to go back up to let the digestive tract reset itself.

It's incredibly painful, with gassy bloating and cramping, but a couple days of just water and soup usually bring me back online after about 4 days.
