I feel like sometimes I'm beating a dead horse and this may have been answered already but for those that have had total colon removal how was your weight gain after surgery and in the future? I weight about 90 now I really hope to gain about 20 pounds In the future after surgery I would love to hear others experience with this

I'm hoping to gain at least that amount. Before my colectomy I had a temp ileostomy and I got my weight from 110 to 135. I couldn't seem to get past that 135 barrier for long, probably because I still had active disease in my colon. I'm hoping once my incision heals and I can begin to work out that I will gain weight easily. I would suggest you go slow, but lift weights. You don't have to go super heavy but lifting weights are one of the best thing you can do for your body. Muscle weighs more than fat and if you do the exercises without a large break then you burn fat as you gain muscle. Take care

If your diet is severely restricted right now due to pain or strictures, you will probably gain weight after a few months following proctocolectomy because it should open up your food choices. Don't expect great weight changes in the first few months, however, since your body is adjusting to such a huge change. Ileostomies are generally hyperactive in the first few month once they finally get going and tend to empty food out of your system quickly without absorbing all of the calories and nutrients. This will slow down as the inflammation from surgery subsides and eventually your small intestines begin to absorb more water once your body realizes the colon isn't there to do that job anymore. It was somewhere around 4 months for me when I suddenly begin to gain weight rapidly. My weight has remained in the 117-120 pound range for 2 years now.

Some people do gain a lot of weight after their surgery. It really depends on how much remaining disease you have in other parts of your body, what maintenance meds you will be on, your body type, diet, etc. A LOT of factors.

Keep asking your questions. That's what we are all here for--to share and help each other! :)

After my last 2 surgeries (less than a year apart) I'vegained weight easily . I'm in the process of losing the extra weight. Easier to gain than lose.

I'm on a low residue dote due to my strictures the narrowing is so bad that they could not get all the way through with the camera. I'm suppose to not have things like tomatoes and seeds raw veggies and nuts and beans however I do eat tomatoes I love them I try to Chew very well. I'm trying really hard to put some weight on I figure if I can at least gain 15 pounds in the next 17 days that would be fantastic. Then I won't worry so much about the wright loss after surgery I've added the ensures I try to drink at least 2 a day if possible I know it varies person to person. I want popcorn so bad but it does cause pain for me. I do hope to put some weight on I avoid mirrors because of my weight. Last night I was at my daughter and there were several of is sitting around the table talking and my daughter and I were discussing our weight and one of the women at the table made a comment if only she had my problem, she was referring to the low weight I said what problem you wish you had crohns I knew it was time for me to leave.
