My daughter will be starting Humira on Thursday, what should I expect?
Will she feel sick will she have pain in her stomach at the injection site?
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!

Hi farfalle. My daughter has been on Humira now for about 3 months. She doesnt have any side effects after the shot but we also plan it for an hr before bed. Ice the spot you are injecting before and after. It helps. She keeps her lovey close and it blocks her from seeing me do it. She still gets scared every time but she prefers this to the Remicade treatment as it doesn't make her miss school or social life/activities. Everyone is great here and will have plenty of stories I'm sure!

Humira burns a lot.
Our doc has us add lidocaine to the humira syringe
A lot less painful that way.
Otherwise DS does his at bed time close to the weekend .
It makes him tired so be can sleep in the next day .

Good luck

Yes, same as above, it burns a lot, ice helps a bit but not a lot. We do it while she's watching tv so that's distracted. It's a painful shot but like anything else our kids get used to it.
My daughter personally preferred the inconvenience of Remicade to weekly Humira shots, but unfortunately Remicade stopped working for her.
Hope Humira works for your daughter!

Lucy has been on humira since June 2013, the injection hurts a lot ice helps, she generally needs lots of cuddles afterwards. Hope it goes ok the first one is the worst it gets much easier after that. Hugs

No advice, just sending good luck that the shot goes well and humira works well for her! :ghug:

There are loading doses: the first is 4 times a normal dose, the second is 2 times. The epipens are startling. I would request the syringe if you can, you can control the dosing rate. Humira really burns, so we ice up my son for about 15 min beforehand, I also take the syringe out of the fridge 15 min. beforehand, so it's not as cold and not as painful. My son chooses his front thighs and we rotate between them. I've heard around the belly is less painful, but he won't try it. If you opt for lidocaine, you have to mix it just before injection, or inject it first, a few minutes before Humira, we haven't tried that, but did discuss it. Humira has a great support site, nurses are on-call and one will come to your home to help you through the first injection. We've had no side effects, but occasional blistering or rashing at the injection site.

Best of luck and I hope it works for your daughter!

Sending loads of luck your way that all goes well for Maddie! :ghug:

Well we did the shots today and it was HELL! Hope it gets easier on my little girl and hope it works because the 6 mp did not!

Please ask about the lidocaine
the gut wrenching screams moved to an "wow that hurts" with lidocaine-
Sounds complicated but easy once the doc /nurse shows you.

most GI's do not know about the lidocaine trick.BTW
