I've had crohn's and colitis for almost 3 years. Well, been diagnosed that long but had it my whole life.
But anyways, lately i'm hungry ALL the time. Like every two to three hours. And if i don't eat soon enough i get nauseous.. or even when i do eat i get nauseous..
Anyone know why? or get the same way?
Thanks for your help,
Jessie

Hi Jessie

Are you on meds? I could be wrong, but I've read alot on here that some medication makes you hungry all the time!!

No, not at the moment. But that is true. I was on prednisone at one time [EVIL] and i ate even when i wasnt hungry then. haha i still have stretchmarks from it >.>

I'm not on medication (still undiagnosed) but I feel the same way. I am always hungry, eat, feel like crap or don't eat and feel like crap. It's a losing battle!!

Yeah. I just ate some ramen..the whole pack. and still feel hungry.
I feel like i have a tape worm or something.

and i should probably add that i'm either losing weight or not gaining any.

This is how I felt when I was on Flagyl. I basically kept a bag of pretzels by my side at all times and ate them constantly to keep the nausea at bay.

Have you tried Dramamine? Do you have a Rx for Phenergan or Zofran? For me those worked a little bit (enough to take the edge off), although Phenergan totally knocks me out.

I hope you feel better soon. I know how awful and frustrating it is.

I'm the exact same way. I have to eat every 2-3 hours and if I don't eat as soon as I get hungry, then I get nauseous. I take a Zofran so I'm able to eat, then eat a few nuts or some grapes to put something on my belly. I've always gotten nauseous if I get SUPER hungry, like hours past meal time, but lately it's been much more immediate and severe. Not sure what causes that.

I'm not on anything right now, but whenever my parent's get back from out of state i'll keep those in mind if i can get them to take me to my GI.
So, pretzels are good for nausea?

yeah i know what you mean.
so what exactly is zofran? is it like odensatron?

HI Jessie, i have crohn's for 21 years now and now it as flared up again. i am on predisone and other medications to keep the inflammation under control. i get the same hunger pains and when i eat i get sick and painful bowel cramps. and nausea to go with it. zofran is the same as Ondansetron. same drug matter of factor to treat nausea and viomiting . i have tried it and it didn't work for me but, it could work for you. i take Domperidone maleate same principal it prevents nausea and viomiting. Hope this helps. Also with crohn's your body becomes malnourishned and therefore craves food to counter act the food that is missing. i drink boost, ensure, and other nutritional drinks and plenty of water this seems to fill in the hunger gap. I hope this helps. best wishes.

Thanks Scott.
I have to talk to my GI whenever i go back about more/new meds. I was on remicade and some steroids and the odensatron as needed. and i was having to drink peptamin [yikes] for a while too. I guess it's about time to order more... >.> haha

I have experienced this before but only when I was first adjusting to 6MP. It made me nauseous and eating made the nausea go away for some reason. I remember thinking 'will I ever be on meds that DON'T make me fat for some reason or other?' lol. But it subsided after a few weeks. It's never happened to me as a direct result of having IBD though.

What's your current condition? If you're flaring then weight loss is normal but if you're meant to be in remission and are losing weight despite eating a lot, it might be worth mentioning to do your doctor just to be sure.

Oh, what's 6mp?
I'm pretty sure i'm flaring I just have to go back to my gi soon to tell him :/

..yayy crohn's :p

I am semi-sort of the same way. I wake in the morning and sometimes I feel so hungry that I feel sick. And throughout the entire day just can't stop eating. And other days(like today) I wake up and just feel nauseous all day long. I have to fight to get somthing that will pass as breakfast down so I can take my morning pills and not feel worse. It usually carries off and on throughout the entire day. I have no idea why we IBD sufferers feel like this. As if we don't have enough to deal with. Feeling like we are constantly hungover when(at least I) don't even drink. I'm tired of it....

It's not that pretzels are good for nausea, it's just that when I was nauseous it was the only thing that was inoffensive enough that I could eat it. In my case constantly eating helped to keep the nausea at bay (empty stomachs can make nausea worse).

Some have recommended peppermint for nausea (in various forms), as well as ginger tea.

Zofran is the brand name of ondansetron.

Ohh okay. Cool :)

About a month ago I ate a lot. I went through a really snacky faze, and got nausea as well, and didn't gain a pound after eating heavily for like a month straight. I don't know what caused it. Anyway, that faze has totally passed and I'm back to eating almost less then 3 meals a day. I sure miss being hungry. I take promethazine for nausea.

A couple of Ginger capsules with meals help a lot with nausea and digestion in general. No side effects and it is cheap.

The first two thoughts that come to my mind are hypoglycemia and GERD. Many people with GERD misinterpret the feeling of the acid reflux as the body's signal of, "I'm hungry".

And then of course there is the potential for upper GI manifestation of Crohn's :(

When I was on Remicade that happened to me. I would be in pain and feel really nauseous yet I would feel super hungry. After I would eat I would feel so sick yet I still felt hungry. Since I have been of Remicade the whole being hungry all the time has faded. It could also be stress triggering hunger?

My 3 year old is bleeding right now. She just got diagnosed. She is starving. She tells me she is hungry all the time. The GI says it is a good thing. She is on steroids now predilisone. It must be the meds. I am glad I found this bc the steroid could stunt her growth and if she over eats... She might get bullied I really need to figure out her diet plan. We have only been doing this for a couple of days, I am still learning how to help her. the thing that stinks is idk how to tell what makes her flare or if it was a the stomach bug that started her first symptoms. Does it always happen right away. So you know it was the last thing you ate. She bleed for 3 weeks my GI thought it was a bug that started it bc my 1 year old had really bad diarrhea for 2 days but w/o blood.

Or is she confusing belly pains with hunger pains? Idk... :ybatty:

I've started researching Prednisone and found this page which has some good dietary suggestions if you scroll down.

Jeesie,
I do know what it is like to be both nauseous and hungry at the same time. And if I don't eat soon enough the nausea gets worse. This used to happen frequently, but not very often anymore.

What worked for me: small, frequent meals with a balance of simple sugars, complex carbs and protein, fluids in-between meals, eating at the same time every day (especially eating breakfast as soon as I got up-- before the nausea started), mint tea, chewy ginger tablets, and smelling anything minty. There's also an acupuncture point in the midline of the arm, two fingers widths from the wrist that helps nausea if you press on it quite firmly. (I use my fingernail or the eraser end of a pencil.)

Good luck!

I know I am weighing in a bit late but I get nausea all the time. Its a constant battle - empty stomach makes it worse, so I eat plain crackers and cheddar cheese or plain biscuits. But then half the time food makes me feel sick too!
I sympathise with you its such a pain. I would advise going really plain, eat crackers, rice, plain pasta or white toast. Eat little and often.
Hope this helps :)

Hi Folks. My daughter Leah is 14 and is constantly eating. She could have a good dinner and then be looking for more food half hour later. The doctors say its nothing to worry about, but my gut reaction is different. I know that lack of absorption of food is one of the cornerstones of Crohns, but surely the amount of food that she's ingesting has to have some effect on her insides ?!? I'm a Personal Wellness Coach and a Herbalife Nutritionist, so I KNOW that she is getting good food into her. We are in Ireland, where the facilities and services for Crohns/IBD/UC sufferers is not as good as it should be, but we're working on that. I don't recognize a lot of the medication that is mentioned in the above threads. Leah is on Salofalk Sachets, (which are easier for her to take as she cant swallow a tablet whole), 6MP (Puri-N-Ethol) to stop the production of white blood cells, Vitamin D drops and an Iron Supplement. Compared to many others girls her age (and younger) that we have met through the whole diagnosis, Leah knows how lucky she is. She hasnt had MAJOR surgery, and most of the time we seem to be on top of this. However, there are times where I want to scream with frustration. She got diagnosed when she was 10, and by the age of 12, she had 7 teeth fillings, due to the severe amount of acid that was coming up from her insides. As I write, we are only home from a Dental Hospital, who after cancelling on us 3 times, decided NOT to take out the 3 teeth that she desperately needs extracting as she is in too much pain. A 5 hour round trip completely wasted,as they did not know enough about the disease to gauge her reaction to the general anaesthetic. Is anyone else having trouble with their teeth...? As regards food, I took Leah completely off white bread/pasta/rice and also "normal" milk, and she improved a lot. Research shows that an awful lot of people cannot handle the ingredients in milk, especially the Lactose. I could keep going on and on about how this condition has turned her life upside down....
Wishing all you sufferers the very best !

I think pretzels would react like saltine crackers, they have so few ingredients and are bland enough to help with nausea.

I have the same problem, Crohn's has made my stomach ultra sensitive to everything. I went gluten free which I have found helps tremendously but I know that is a big change. Stick to several small meals (or as small as you can get them). At one point I was doing eight a day, and picking out things like pretzels (my go to) and yogurt. Since your eating so much its best to stay away from super fatty foods for every meal. I also found that drinking water constantly helps. Definitely talk to your doctor about Zofran, it's all I take when my stomach is upset. It dissolves in your mouth so that it will immediately be absorbed, and doesn't generally make people tired. Hope you feel better!
