I have recently started going to the gym and I would like to ask for some advice. I am starting to feel a bit better in general but were as cardio seems to be helping my crohn's, any sort of weight work seems to really upset my stomach and give me the poops. Is it just something I will have to live with or is there something i can do to help it.

Hi Sir Poops A lot,

I used to workout, like go to the gym etc and lift weight, but stopped because...well i found it boring, so now I play group sports where I get the exercise I need without realizing it.

But when I was working out, I couldn't lift weights, without getting the poops myself or letting out the odd fart.

I found it was something I had to live with for myself, as I guess when you lift heavy things, I'm sure you're putting a lot of strain on your body, especially on the core of your body which is where our bladder is.

This isn't scientific fact (not from the top of my head anyway) but I would believe it to make sense

Hey there mr poops,
Ive been working out for about 5 months using the stronglifts 5x5 program with a few adjustments. I know what you mean buy upset stomach due to working out, example : leg press was was the worst for me due to the incline and having eaten about 40 min before workout. Im 6-2 and when i started my regimen i was around 128lbs, i am now stable around 150. Obviously your diet will play a big part in the weight gain. The reason for the 5x5 program is with us IBD folks too much isolation exercise just wears our bodies down and its already hard for our bodies to absorb nutriends, so the program uses alot of compound exercise. Now as for cardio.....i hate running or most cardio for that matter but i rollerblade about 8 miles each saturday. The reason i say that is the workout program utilizes squats everytime you go to the gym so your knees might be sore for a bit, but it SIGNIFICANTLY builds your legs and for the first few weeks i would think you would be too sore to run (assuming thats what you do). But overall i feel absolutly amazing....I also reconmend juicing vegetables for the protien because meat is har to digest and give me (personally) bad stomach pain, chicken isnt to bad but thats up to you
Hope this helped, message me if you have any questions.

For me, it was a matter of how intense the activity is - an hour of hockey for me will cause loose movements for a solid week afterwards, same if I push myself bike riding. If I relax and do the same distance riding, I don't have any issues. As far as diet (daydreamer), go with what works. For me protein is crucial. I live on beef without any issues and it is veggies and fruit I basically have to avoid. Find what works for you, and ask advice from your GI or nutritionist. Be specific with your intentions and where your crohn's is at. It can be done - I am back to 170 pounds and generally good health now (aside from joint issues that crohn's is responsible for) whereas only three years ago 150 pounds was a good day.

Thanks for all the help guys, I will have to sort out my diet out and get a workout plan. i've been a crohn for 10 years and up until about 2 years ago I was Ok with my diet just avoid fresh fruit & veggies and I had no problems, then I had an op because I got an abscess and it's been bad ever since.

I find that if I havent exercised for a week or two I will get bloating and will go to the toilet more after I started up again. If I keep exercising, within a few days my stomach gets much better and I can carry on with no problems

I find the gym helps as well,if your just starting out be careful for cardio it's hard to beat the cross trainer may also be known as an elliptical in the USA.rowing machine is really good as well, cross trainer is low impact on joints which helps.remember to do warm up and cool down.all the best, good luck

The classes at the gym seem to work best for me - I too can't weight lift without the poops and such. Swimming laps is truly my best bet!
