Ileostomy: new product for concealing below clothes

Hi all,

10 years ago I received an ileostomy as a result of Crohns Disease.

While today I am very grateful for the quality of life that the pouch has restored to me, one constant frustration I have is how the edges of the pouch fold forward, bulge out when the bag starts to fill, or just sit in a visible way below a t-shirt or otherwise.

I have tried bandages/support garments that go around the stomach and over the pouch, but I find the pressure uncomfortable and the restriction of the flow from the stoma can lead to leaks under the pouch plate I find.

So I am developing a new tape product that will essentially allow you to pin the edges of the bag to your body without putting pressure on the stoma. This should allow the stoma to still work and for output to move to the bottom of the bag, without having the edges bulge under a shirt.

My question is, who out there has similar frustrations and why? What features would you like to see in the tape product? The more feedback I can get the better I can make the design.

It's an interesting idea but I would be concerned the tape is using some valuable real estate by pressing down on the pouch and making it have less room for stool and gas.

I always hesitate to use any kind of tape product due to a sometimes severe reaction to adhesives. Tegaderm does pretty well, but is expensive when used frequently. Adhesive sensitivity and overall cost are negatives that first come to my mind.

Thanks for the reply. The point you make re: cost is a good one and one I am conscious of having used other tapes. If a pre-cut product were made available in boxes of 30 (think of something like an upside-down horseshoe) for securing the outer edges of the pouch to you, what would be an acceptable price for you to buy this product? Keeping in mind the tape would be specially designed to be gentle on sensitive skin, hypoallergenic, and the 30 plasters would be pre-cut for ease of use.

Thanks!

2th fairy, I use a product called opsite flexifix, it is pretty much the same as tagaderm but I think it's a hell of a lot cheaper, It comes in rolls that you can cut to size, I use it in strips around my flange to waterproof and help with security and it works wonders, maybe you could have a look at that?

To the OP, I think it is probably something we have all struggled with. I've used comfizz waistbands which like you say can sometimes feel a bit restrictive and I worried at first that it would block everything but they work quite well for me. My main concern is that as I use a 2 piece with a plastic ring/clip mechanism , that actually sticks out more than anything else and I still haven't really found a way of getting it all hidden properly other than going back to using a 1 piece which wouldn't be ideal.

Thank you sickofcrohns I think its likely a bit thin. We need a tape that covers enough of the wafer and skin to delay leaks.

Does it hurt when you remove the tape from your skin? Probably a dumb question, I know it doesn't feel good to rip any tape off your skin.

Not sure but what u are describing sounds a bit like the tape I use refer to pic.,It is gr8..

I'm not getting the point of the elastic tape. If your wafer is peeling, perhaps you need to find another brand to try. The regular Coloplast sensura wafer peel off way too fast but the assura and sensura xpro stick until I remove them. I also wear a small support belt to keep things secure, but I never understood the point of the tape if you have a properly fitted appliance.

I use the tape sometimes because my skin is so dry and flaky that nothing will stick to it. It's sort of weird, since the skin is supposed to be dry to get the flange to stick - but as it turns out if it's too dry it won't stick either...lol I only have problems around the bottom edge though, so it's not too bad.

That sucks :-( i hope that you find relief. That must be so frustrating for you.

I use the tape as an extra level of protection to keep the wafer in place and if a leak occurs it will give me a little more time.
