Hello,
I've finally made the decision to go ahead and get an ileostomy as an attempt to help with my rectal fistula which hasn't healed up (4 years with setons and on remicade). The hope is that the ileostomy will be temporary, allowing my rectal area to rest, and the surgeon will also try a flap procedure for my fistula.
My surgeon did mention that with an ileostomy some waste will still pass through my rectal area (might me more like mucous) while with a colostomy less will pass through my rectum, but it might be harder to reverse.
Just wondering for those of you with ileostomies, how much actually passes through you're rectal area? Does eating different kinds of foods make a difference? I have found that dairy causes more mucous in my body so I have eliminated it from my diet. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
