Hello,
I've finally made the decision to go ahead and get an ileostomy as an attempt to help with my rectal fistula which hasn't healed up (4 years with setons and on remicade). The hope is that the ileostomy will be temporary, allowing my rectal area to rest, and the surgeon will also try a flap procedure for my fistula.

My surgeon did mention that with an ileostomy some waste will still pass through my rectal area (might me more like mucous) while with a colostomy less will pass through my rectum, but it might be harder to reverse.
Just wondering for those of you with ileostomies, how much actually passes through you're rectal area? Does eating different kinds of foods make a difference? I have found that dairy causes more mucous in my body so I have eliminated it from my diet. Thanks in advance for any feedback!

Hello,
I had a ilyostomy for about 9 months and then had it reversed.

Yes I did have stool come out of my rectum but it was more like mucous and it only happen about every 2-3 wekks. (once in every 2-3 weks) the first time it freaked me out and I went to the ER. I sure wish the surgeon would have told me up front, I would have saved alot of money.

There was no pain at all passing this, it was just weired.

I hope this helps you.

If you would like to know about the reversal, send me a PM and I would be glad to help you out. My wife has also had a ilyostomy and reversal and then a perm. ilyostomy so we know alot about what you will be going through. (It's not as bad as most would think)

I had an ileostomy for 3 months and only had mucus come out once. I was warned it would happen but thought that it might at least happen more than once.

I have an ileostomy and pass mucus rectally several times a day. Just about everytime I urinate, I pass a little mucus. No pain, no urgency--it just passes out. I have total sphincter control of it, though, not like an accident.

Hi dgg
I have an ileostomy and I pass mucous several times per day.
I had colitis in the stump for some time - but this is now managed with salofalk foam.
Now that it is all under control - it's just like doing a poop and has all the same signs etc.
I'm allergic to dairy - that has a diabolical and swift impact!
Good luck with your Stoma.
I'm going to miss my little guy once he gets reversed.

Hi dgg, I have an ileostomy and only pass mucous once a month if that, maybe only very two months. I sometimes pass wind but I think this is only if my bag gets overfull with wind at night and wind gets pushed down the lower bit of my intestine. Once i Had diaohrea (I can never spell that) which again I think was because the bag became overfull at night and the excess was forced into the lower intestine. Far better than having a leak from the bag I can assure you.
Not sure about whether dairy will create more mucous in the colon. From the response above it seems to be an individual thing and not related to dairy since Samboi passes mucous lots and doesn't eat dairy. It may relate to whether you have inflammation in the colon or rectum, but I'm only guessing here.
Good luck with the op and let us know how you get on. Any other questions don't hesitate to ask.
