I had my ileostomy on Jan 11th because of my crohns. And my doctor said he left my rectum so it was possible for a reversal. I've read a lot of threads about the J pouch and them not being for people with crohns. My question might be stupid but do you have to use a J pouch to do a reversal? I'm not doing this anytime soon, doc said my body needs to heel up, just doing some research.

Herndog,
No, you don't have to have a J pouch for a reversal. But if you colon was removed you will have a J pouch. My wife had a J pouch for over 20years and then scaring was begining to bildup so she got a ilyostomy again. She had Colitis. (I have crohns.) I had a ilyostomy for about 9 months and then had a reversal and it was the best thing I ever did.
I hope things go good for you.

Jim, not everyone who has their colon removed has a J-pouch. See the links in my post up above. Shalin is not the only one like this, either.

Was the 9 months something you and your doctor decided? Did they run any tests on you to determine if you were ready for surgery?
