immune system questions

sorry I don't use tags.... anyways...

I'm on remicade, which works great for me. I'm not tolerating methotrexate anymore, but still taking it. I am sure I can walk on hot coals without flinching now though. That is when you should get dosage reduced.

So, I have been developing a bunch of skin rashes all over for a few months. All of my toenails are growing fungus. I have had really low energy ever since the prednisone treatments. I can't exactly take regular showers. I have nobody, and I will not get anyone, so don't say it.

Alright, now, tell me what I should ask my doctor. I already asked about the toenail fungus. Doc said that's incurable. So should I get something for my skin rashes? Also, if someone would kindly give me an in-depth report of self-care for people with immune problems, as I never learned how to take care of myself because mom died of cancer when I got crohn's disease. The timing was very bad.

Thanks for your time, please don't get all sappy with me, I'm tired of it

hi KW, & welcome to the forum :)

to a certain extent there are some things you can do to try & keep your immune system healthy. multivitamins daily can help, particularly those which contain pre- & pro-biotics. a varied diet as much as your Crohns will allow, and generally looking after yourself - getting sleep, getting fresh air & sunshine, keeping off smoking & alcohol..

you mention your doc, is this a general practitioner or a Gastro specialist? i would be very surprised if fungal toenail infections are untreatable! maybe you could consider going to see an alternative health practitioner for some advice if there is nothing forthcoming from your medical team.

i know of one product they sell at health shops - Sambucol - which is purely a juice made from berries, and is promoted to boost your immune system. you can take it every day on a small maintenance dose, and increase the dose if you are fighting an infection.

hey there KW
i didnt totally catch everything you said. what do you mean by youre not tolerating the methotrexate anymore, are you having a reaction? i was on the remi and methotrex together for a few years too.
skin rashes are sometimes another manifestation of the crohns, and not a drug reaction. the skin can get inflamed, just like our guts do. i would try to find a dermatologist that might specialize in crohnic conditions.
ding pretty much covered it as far as taking care of yourself. just be good to your body.
hope this helps!
