Imuran/Vitamin Dilemma

Hello all!

So I have gotten a best case scenario and have found my remission has started. In the past month I have begun taking Imuran, and in the past two weeks have also increased my Vitamin D intake to 5000 IU a day. My concern is that I have no real way of knowing which is causing the remission, if not both. My hunch is that the Imuran is not what is causing this relief because I read that the Imuran will take about two months to take effect. While I have yet to go consult my doctor, I am considering stopping the Imuran at some point, lest I take it needlessly and suffer the side effects. I realize that if it is the Imuran, it will not be as effective the second time around if I go back on it once having stopped. Help?

Additional details:
Prednisone dependant and currently tapering off while Imuran begins to take effect.
Immediate disappearance of symptoms once the vitamin dosage was raised.
D3 taken with appropriate cofactors and folic acid with calcium.

I don't think stopping Imuran makes it less effective the next time. I have not ever heard that anyway. Some biological drugs work that way.

Get your D level checked before you make any decisions. While 5,000 iu seems like a lot if D to take, it does not mean anything if your blood level is not up.

I had to take 35,000 iu to get my level to budge.

See what the D level is and then you have more solid information to go off of.

I am on Imuran also. I would like nothing better than to go off of it.

Glad you're doing well now buddy, I'm on my 25th day of imuran, startin to feel pretty good, only on 50mg, upping dosage soon I think I imagine by the 2 month mark I'll be feelin great, Im gonna get my vit d levels good, did you get them tested before beginning supplementation?

Sadly I only heard from a friend on the forums about how important vitamin D is after I started the Imuran, and so I have no idea what my levels before the treatment was. Getting my D levels checked may be a good idea, though, because if it's low then it must be the Imuran. I think I'll get on that.

Josh, I'm glad your treatment is helping you, I'm on 175 mg and to be honest am kind of hoping that the vitamins are what's causing the remission. This drug is pretty rough when it comes to side effects at my dosage.

Hey Dan, if it took that much D3, maybe you're having a tough time absorbing it? You probably already know this, but taking it with .4 mg of folic acid and calcium helps a lot to keep it in your system longer to allow absorption, as well as taking it with fatty foods.
