Soo, I've been on Lialda for two weeks probably. Not sure if it's helping or not. I've been keeping a food diary to see what I can tolerate and what I can't. But the diary doesn't seem to be helping, either, because EVERY time I eat something, a little bit later I have pain in my lower right side.

What gives? I thought if I ate really mild or bland things I would stop having bad pains... ? I just don't feel like eating at all anymore, but I'm supposed to take the Lialda on a full stomach. :(

I can't quite empathize with you since my symptoms aren't usually based around what I eat. I know it's a common issue for others so someone here can probably offer some insight. Hang in there!

Try eating soups, shakes and other liquid foods for a while as they are really easy to digest. But nothing with too much fibre in (like too many veggies). I haven't tried Liaida, but I do know it's a mild med, so if you don't notice an improvement soon, go back to your doctor because you might need a course of steroids or something to calm things down.

I agree with Rebecca85s advise. Eat soups, home made apple sauce, smoothies and things easy to digest. Also try eating smaller meals but more often if you can.

You poor thing, I have had this problem too in the very recent past. I dreaded eating or drinking ANYTHING knowing within 5-10 minutes I would be doubled over on the couch screaming and crying all because I ate a piece of grilled chicken.

The soup advice is pretty sage. It seems to help. For me particularly Dinty Moore stew for some reason seems to be very gentle on my tummy. And its hearty. Also, apple sauce! Smooth yogurt without fruit pieces in it.

Everyone seems to be different. Unfortunately its a lot of trial and error. I hope you find food that is gentle for your poor tummy! Thats my wish for you!

Oh and yes, I don't know much about Lialda but perhaps some steroids might be something that can help? Just to get the imflamation down...

Thanks everyone for the advice... I will definitely try soup, smoothies, apple sauce, and shakes. I've been on the Lialda for about 2 1/2 weeks now, so I thought it would be working by now and it's just frustrating/disappointing that I'm still feeling crappy.

I have responded well to Prednisone in the past, so I may talk to my doctor about that. I have nothing for the pain right now, can't take NSAIDs and Tylenol doesn't seem to help, so I think if I could take something when it's really horrible that would help too.

HI, re steriods

I can fully get where you are coming from i was at the stage i couldnt even drink a glass of water without terrific pain and screaming.i gained a short spell of remission with surgery resection iliem and another resction bowel.
Concernig steriods, when i went to a nutritional therapist ,who actually when she was in America on a seminar found that taking steriods actually aggrevated the bowel and caused more problems i have to date ,since being diagnosed in 1993 have not had steriods, even when the normal gp would recommend. When i started seeing my specialst he also agreed about the steriods and that they do not give them as standard any more!

My son could only eat applesauce, broth, soy milk and soy protein shakes during bad flares. He also had pain in his lower right side. I hope you find the foods that work for you.

Seeingangels- Do you have any evidence for steroids aggravating the bowels? While steroids have nasty side effects, sometimes they can be a necessary evil.

Hmm.. interesting SeeingAngels. I'll have to look more into it.

Thanks Astra! Lots of good recipes there.

I'm thinking a liquid diet is the way to go for a little bit, and then once I don't have any pain (or not as bad) maybe I'll do more trial and error.

steroids

Hi Rebecca, what i will say is that when i went to the nutritianlist, she did the reasearch, and she came back with a course of treatmentt to get me through. she found out in her seminar in America that the stuff every doctor is handing out for every one with a bowel problem is that the medication given i.e.steriods was in fact part of the problem. Since then i have never had steriods, and i have even agrued with some top specialist on this, and i have not taken them. For me i stand by this , i do not have any papers on it from when i saw her unfortunatly,if i did the so called doctors would still disagree.
when i saw my specialist 2 years ago and he asked what i had been treated with etc he was very surpised i had not have steriods, but also stated it was no longer there normal course to prescribe this any more.!
i have always taken a supplement called Pro Greens,in my fruit juice in the morning and have done for the past 12 years since seeing my nutriionist. It has supplies me with viatmins and like a food suplement but also some calmimg of the inflamination in the colon, so i am able to get about every day i can manage my tiredness and have some quality of life with my family and have a other supplemnts also.
I hope this helps, but i believe this has been right for me.If i can help you in any way i will try.Good to talk to you today. Good luck.

Ok I just don't get why you would trust the word of one nutritionalist over several doctors! Personally the steroids had a dramatic effect on my bowels- within 2 days I went from not being able to eat without having to take morphine after, to being more or less painfree. I know doctors try to avoid steroids becaise of the known side effects (bone loss, dependency etc).
