I'm a 31 year old male. About two weeks into January '12 I started experiencing some discomfort (a dull ache) in my right side underneath my ribs. Went to the Dr and was told to come back if it got worse. Right after that my bowel movements began to change. They became loose and more frequent and also changed colors, at first going to yellow and eventually settling on a dark green. I'm not sure it's D but the consistency is almost like baby BM. Very soft.
I ended up getting a CT scan of my abdomen last week, which revealed some colon inflamation. My Dr wrote 'colitis' on my stool sample sheet. My stool was tested for infection and it came back negative. Blood work normal as well.
Right now I typically have 1-3 BMs a day. A few times it's been sudden, explosive D but I believe that's only been twice this whole time. My stool is rarely brown anymore and I get bits of undigested food in there sometimes.
I'm going to try and schedule a colonoscopy soon. My questions are: could this be colon cancer or would that have shown up on the CT scan. My Dr said my lymph nodes were normal on the CT. I'm not sure what that means exactly.
Also, are there only two forms of inflamed colon? Crohn's or UC? What else could cause colitis? Also, is it normal to have a constant mild discomfort? Mine isn't too bad but it's annoying. Nexium seems to calm it down a bit. Will it progress and get worse if left untreated?
I have not had nausea or vomiting. I haven't had a fever either. At the beginning I didn't have much of an appetite at all or much energy but that's slowly came back to normal.
What can I do right now to calm this down? I've tried removing gluten, not sure if that helped or not. I also cut out milk. What foods calm and heal the colon?
Any suggestions would be very helpful. Sorry there are so many questions. I've been to several Drs and am just now getting answers three months into this. A long and trying process indeed.
Thanks!
