I am writing on behalf of Dr. Christine Rini at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine to tell you about a study we’re conducting to understand how people cope with inflammatory bowel disease when they are at high risk for colorectal cancer and may be making tough decisions about how to protect themselves from it. We’re specifically interested in the experiences of people with IBD who have recently had a colonoscopy that shows pre-cancer or a similar abnormal condition that puts them at high risk for cancer. The study is funded by the National Cancer Institute and has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Mount Sinai. There are many studies on the medical aspects of IBD; however, we’re interested in the emotional aspects of coping with the disease. We understand that coping with an abnormal colonoscopy and risk for colorectal cancer can be very difficult for patients and their loved ones, and this is why we’re interested in learning more about their experiences. We hope to use this information to create programs and resources that can help patients and their family members.
The study involves completion of telephone interviews and mailed or online questionnaires (no drugs or treatment). To be successful, we need to bring it to the attention of people who may be eligible to participate and who want to be a part of it. I’m writing to ask for your help in getting word out about the study to people who might be interested in participating. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
For this study we’re looking for people who fit the following description:
- Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s colitis, or indeterminate inflammatory bowel disease
- At least 18 years old
- English speaking
- US resident
- Diagnosed with pre-cancer (dysplasia) or a similar abnormal condition after a recent colonoscopy
- Has a follow up surveillance colonoscopy scheduled for 4 or more weeks in the future to check the status of the abnormal condition, and
- Is married or in a committed romantic relationship with someone for at least 6 months
