Ok, so the insurance I am on will run out at the end of the year (Cobra Anthem PPO). I am 27 and a full time student. My school offers a health insurance through united healthcare but I have a pre-existing condition (crohn's disease and interstitial cystitis) and therefore I don't think that will work. I take Asacol and Lanzoprazole (for acid reflux) I live in Indiana, and unless I can get a job, I don't know what I'm going to do, any help would be appreciated.

As of january 201130 the new health insurance bill passed by Obama states that a pre existing condition can no longer exclude you from being able to obtain insurance. In other words your Crohns diagnosis doesn't matter and you should be able to go on your schools healthcars without to.much trouble. Before getting on it though contact a school concellor or someone who can talk to you about the coverage.

And if that doesn't work get ahold of the pharmaceutical company and ask if they have a program for folks with limited or no isurance and if they do more than likely you can receive the meds directly from them at no cost. We did that with one of my son's asthma medications because even with out insurance it was still $300 a mont and there was no way we could do it.
Hope that helps. Best of luck and better health to ya

All states have a program for those who have no insurance called uncompensated care in hospitals and MDs offices. Based upon a person's income, the pt. is either responsible for a portion or none of the bills incurred for the year. All they have to do is call the billing office prior to their MD visit or hospitalization and request the UCC form, fill it out, provide a recent W2, proof of residence, & whatever else is asked. It is good for an entire year. Then if the pt. still has no insurance, they just have to reapply.

I use to do medical billing for a local hospital for 4 yrs. where I live so this is how I know about it.

I am in the nursing field an didn't even know about this. Thank you for sharing this info. Wish I would have known for info sake to some of the parents out there who didn't have insurance and the like when their children ended up sick

Not sure if this goes for other places, but my bank offers health insurance at a good price just for having a bank account with them. You have to really look at all your options, but I haven't had health insurance for awhile, but I think this is how I am getting mine.

Some of them say theres a 180 day "hold" on it if you have a pre-existing condition, so it's no good if you need it immediately, but if you have the time it may be something worth looking into
