Hello group-

First of all I'd like to express my appreciation that something like this site exists! I am really looking forward to learning and helping here!

My story:

I am a 26 year old male living in Atlanta GA. I was first diagnosed with Crohn's in 2001 when I was a freshman at Georgia Tech. I had the standard procedure of losing a ton of weight, a ton of pain, and mis-diagnosis. After my first colonoscopy it became clear what was going on and I started treatment.

After taking steroids to get everything under control, my first treatment was Colazol. I actually ended up having an allergic reaction to this med and was quickly taken off. I then began 6MP and took to this medication well. For years I was fine. I had small flares here and there, a few times requiring steroids. Also had the normal side effects of lack of energy, bad reactions to certain foods, and stool complications. But overall the 6MP kept things in check and I stayed relatively healthy.

About 9 months ago I had a routine colonoscopy which showed my situation had become much worse. I had bad stricture in my right side where the large and small intestines meet. I'm fortunate that my Crohn's remains in one spot, but it had become bad enough to warrant a change in attack. Aside from low energy levels and my inability to gain weight, I was relatively pain free and surprised at the procedure's results.

After a 2nd opinion I decided to move up to the biologics. I've been on Cimzia since September, and found the self-injections easy to use and my reaction the the meds great. My energy and weight went way up, and overall I've been feeling good.

Well today I had a follow up colonscopy to check to see if Cimzia was helping my situation or not. (I'm getting sick of Trilyte!!) Unfortunately, my situation has not improved and has actually gotten a little worse. It looks like surgery is in my forecast. The doctor said he'd perform a resection (remove about 2-3 feet) and I'd basically be without any affected areas once I recovered. The idea is to start a "clean slate" and do whatever possible to prevent it from coming back.

So I've stumbled on this site in hopes to feel better about having surgery coming soon, and hopefully help others. I'm not thrilled about the idea of surgery. It wont be my first surgery (I've had some good non-Crohn's related injuries), but definitely my most invasive and longest recovery.

I've been fortunate to live a relatively "normal" life with Crohn's and my goal is to not let this development change that!

Well now that I've babbled a bunch, I look forward to being a part of this community!

Alex

hi Alex and welcome to the forum :) it does sound as if you've tried a lot of different tactics to reduce the Crohn's inflammation - maybe it is time to get that diseased bit out and get your health back..

whatever you decide, keep us posted, and i look forward to seeing you around here.

Welcome Alex!
You are absolutely right, this site and everyone on it is amaizing! There is such a wealth of knowledge and support.
There are plenty of people who have gon thorough the same as you are now, they should be able to help with your questions.

Good luck and look forward to hearing how you make out. :)

Welcome! You sound like you have a great attitude, and to me that's half the battle with this disease. Good luck with your surgery.

Cindy

HI Alex, glad you found a place where you can have people really understand what you are going through. I agree with having a healthy attitude and getting all the info you can.

2- 3ft is alot! My first resection was about 6-8 inches, and my second approx a ft, so close to about 2ft. There is talk of a third resection but so far no narrowing and if I dont have that, I might as well try something else (trying to avoid Pred in the worst way) because surgery is a last resort.

I am assuming they will possibly do a laproscopy? It is alot less invasive, and best on your first (hopefully last ) resection. Glady you found us, great people here, some even make you laugh.

Keep us updated on your surgery!!! Hope you heal soon!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

My doctor told me to call him tomorrow for more details on the surgery. I will know a lot more about the prep, the procedure, and recovery then. I'll keep everyone updated.

Good luck man. This place has been great for me as well. I am not sure how much the docs like it, but I think this forum has helped me to understand what went on at the docs and to ask the right questions too.

:welcome: Alex.....Clean slates are good. My resection helped my quality of life immensely. I hope you have the same good luck!

Hey all-

Thanks again for the warm welcome and positive thoughts.

Quick update... got some bloodwork done today and scheduled a CT:e for Monday (2hrs of barium, yippee!). Doctor said after these results get back we'll schedule surgery. I'm looking at a date with the hospital of anywhere between 3 and 6 weeks from now.

After sleeping on yesterday's news, I feel alright about everything. I don't have a choice at this point, so I'm just rolling with it.

Updates soon!

Alex

Another update!

I go in for my ileocolectomy on Thursday. I will have to be in the hospital for 3-6 days. The doctor said it should be lathroscopic so hopefully the muscle cutting stays to a minimum.

I'm 10% nervous, 90% just wanting to get it done with. I'm looking forward to getting this bad stuff out of me and hopefully moving on w/ less symptoms!

I'll check back post-surgery and give another update. Hopefully the hospital has wireless!!

Alex

I bought a Rogers Internet stick for when I was in the hospital (but then again I was there for 24 days). I would have went crazy without it!

Good luck with your surgery and recovery :)

Good luck Alex.... I had laproscopic surgery done the first time. Your fitness level and pain tolerance is a big help. Ask your doctor if you are having a Epidural, you are frozen from the waist down. It didnt work for me but some people it there was no pain. Just a thought. I didnt have a laptop when I was in last Wednesday, my husband bought a new one the DAY I got out. I read a book in two days. Don't worry we will be here when you get out, or if you can get online. Healing hugs!

I'm pretty new to this site too and it has already helped me out a lot!
welcome :)
Good Luck with everything!

Hey everyone! I made it! The doctors tell me that surgery went well! AND... I have internet in my room!

I'm in a little pain, but not too bad. I just got up and took my first walk post-surgery. That was a lot harder than I expected, but I feel much better after doing it.

Will keep you all posted, but so far so good all things considered. THANK YOU so much for all your kind words and positive thoughts!

Best,

Alex

Good stuff Alex! I wished I had internet and a laptop a week ago when I was in the hospital, for a scope.

The pain will be there for a bit, I have had two resections and they take time, but walking too soon or not enough can set you back. Nurses will help you. The more you relax the faster you will heal! Don't be in a rush, eat, drink slow.

Glad it is over for ya. Cute face btw!

Hello everyone! This is the start of night 2 at the hospital. So far everyone has been so wonderful with me. I feel like I am being treated so well.

Just found myself laughing because the chicken broth tastes so good! I guess anything will taste great when you're going on 48 hrs of a clear liquid diet!

Anyway, thats it. My attention span is super low with the pain meds. Thank you all again for your support. My wife just saw this post and is amazed at the community!

Best,

Alex

Yeah chicken broth tasted like heaven to me when I was in the hospital (before I received my Dx) and then on the 3rd day I couldn't even stomach the smell of it, haha. Goodluck!

Hello Alex!

Surprised you're as coherent as you are. If I were on painkillers, my writing would more closely resemble an explosion at the Alpha-Bits factory.

Rest up and heal up -- that's an order!

Glad you are recovering nicely. I too was in the hospital last week and food in the 3rd day was chicken broth it was good. Next meal was strained veggie broth yuck and pineapple jelllo. So I understand days without food even food you never want is suddenly appealing ;). Keep us posted! Tell your wife we say hi, and we will look after you too!

Great news Alex!

sending u big hugs and well wishes, lots of R & R now

speedy recovery
Joan xx

Hello again!

Night 3. Still no gas, but I've been walking a bunch. Anyone know any "tricks" to passing gas post-op? They say as soon as I pass gas, I cam eat more solid foods. Which is one step closer to going home,

Anyway, everything else is same old. Broth is still delish, ha. Nurses have been great. All I need now is to take the next step and get the gas moving.

Talk soon,

Alex

Hello Alex,

Greeting from the Caribbean.
I'm one day new to the forum. Everyone here has been so amazing in the their support.
Congratulations on your successful surgery. Your optimistic attitude will definitely work in your favor.

Happy healing.

Great news Alex! So glad everything went well.

Take care of yourself and don't rush your recovery. Get plenty of rest!

Please keep us posted on your progress -Amy

Hi Alex!

keep bending over from your waist and back up again, worked for me!

speedy recovery!

xxx

Hey Alex, I evented the positions lol. One is bend over touch the floor butt up... works lol. Or you can lay back, lift your butt in air, stomach facing ceiling. Walking is still best tho, also lying on your right side ( gently tho) crosse your left leg over so your left knee is facing right. If all fails hang upside down ;). Kidding, but you will get it out, and you must to get the bm moving. Good luck , let me know what works like a charm. Glad you are recovering with a good attitude!

Hello everyone! Day 5 here at the hospital, and doing well!

Thank you all for your help, input, and positive thinking! It has really helped! I've been able to walk a lot more everyday, and my progress has been great. I passed gas yesterday, and they gave me solid foods for the first time this morning, first solids since last Tuesday! Lying on my right side seemed to do the trick for the gas.

Doctors are telling me I should be able to go home tomorrow- I'm sure ready!

Pain has been manageable. I'm off IV meds and onto pain pills. Which is nice because I can now walk around w/o the IV cart following me around.

Thats it for my update. Lunch is here so I have to go eat more solids. Will update again soon!

Best,

Alex

I'm glad to hear you're going home! I had the same surgery on Feb. 4, also laparoscopically. I've been feeling great since then. By my 2nd day home (after a 6-day hospital stay) I was feeling pretty much back to normal. Now I feel great. Just be careful what you eat--last week I went a little crazy, ate too much fiber, and wound up in the hospital. My doctor says I should have taken it more slowly. So don't make my mistake!!:)

Good stuff Alex.. bet the wife will be happy to have you home too... glad laying on your right side helpes. I read that some where and it works almost everytime.

Let us know how you keep up at home.. Just keep on walking. Easy on trying to get better food in your mouth lol... I know you miss it but the intestines take awhile to fully heal and function. Take care of you! :)

Hello everyone. I am happy to say that I was released today and I'm home! Its a great feeling. Still no BM yet, but the docs say it will come.

Thank you all for the support. It was huge having this site to come to while in the hospital. I will keep updating on my recovery!

Best,

Alex

Hey Alex,
glad to hear everything is going well. I'm about to experience the same thing this coming thursday. It's been nice to have this opportunity to read your post. Great timing. Thank You for sharing.

Take Care,
Alexandra

Hi Alex, Welcome to the forum. Im please to hear you are doing so well after your operation and are home!
Hope all goes well for you and I await an update on how you are travelling.

Hello everyone!

It will be 2 weeks on Thursday since my surgery. I got home last Wednesday. I'm happy to say that my first BM came shortly after I came home. I know that it varies for everyone when your stomach "wakes up" after surgery, and I was really getting worried. But it came (and went!) and my recovery has been progressing well.

I have also been walking up and down the street in my neighborhood. Just like when I was in the hospital, walking at home has really helped. My biggest thing right now is the fatigue. The doctor said to expect this for a couple weeks post surgery, but I'm always tired. I guess its just my body recovering. Its been nice to have my appetite back. I finally got the hunger feeling last weekend, and that continues to improve everyday too.

I had my post-op appointment today and the doctor said everything looks good. My staples came out, and I'm cleared to drive again starting next week. I can't wait- I'm going stir crazy!

But overall, I feel a noticeable improvement everyday. I can move more, eat more, and have less pain.

So again, a huge THANK YOU to all of you. It has been amazing to have this site to turn to pre-op, in the hospital, and now at home in recovery.

Hi there Alex.

I'm very behind on this ... but :welcome: Good to hear you're doing well after you resection!! I hope everything continues to improve for you. The fatigue is normal after surgery. It took a while for me to feel good and have more energy after my resection as well. But you'll get there, just don't over do it, or you'll know it! Keep up the good recovery!
