I had my first iron infusion on Friday and I wondered if anyone else had had one and how long it took for them to notice a difference? I was really surprised at how long it took (5 hours) but I was hoping I might have started to feel a little better already.

Hi Eve. I have had many, many infusions. It will take a few to notice any differance. But you will notice one. Also depends on how low your Iron was. Give it a little time cause it took some time to get low.

Good luck and a speedy recovery to you.

Hi Eve. If you are really low on your iron then yes, it does take a few infusions till you'll start feeling better. I think it took me 3 or 4.

Luckily since then, I've not needed any! Had my last one a couple of years ago.

Hi Eve,

During the 2 years leading into my last resection i had many iron infusions. When i first started them my blood count would go back to a better level within a week or so.But as the CD got so severe the iron infusions did nothing to help me.A week after the last iron infusion i had my RBC was very low (7.2).When the Dr in A&E saw this result he had no hesitation in admitting me to hospital.Following all the usual tests i underwent my 2nd resection.
I hope you get the CD under control & start to feel better ASAP.

Best Wishes

Thank you for your replies everyone! I had no idea that this was something you had to have several of I genuinely thought it was just a one off thing! I dont really mind, its not something that was unpleasant but I'm glad I had my kindle with me that day or it would have been veeeeerrrrryyy boring. I'm not back at the hospital for my review until the end of the month so I wont know until then what the results are but I'm hoping things pick up.xx

I'm surprised it took that long for the infusion. I don't recall mine taking 5 hours, usually only two or three. 5 hours is longer than it takes to infuse a unit of blood. But then again my infusions were always while I was admitted, so my concept of time may have been out of whack.

Well when they started it off I had iron started for 15 minutes, then I had saline for an hour
And then they carried on with the iron but it was on a very slow drip thing.
I was really surprised by the length of time it took too but as long as its going
To do me some good ill try most things.

I think they did my first one slower incase I had a reaction. Then they couldn't get supplies of my normal one one time, so the other type I took, took longer too.

Usually it only takes a few hours.

My CD was severe when i had 2 years of iron infusions.
I never passed much blood during that time but i was anemic. My RBC levels were far too low so they kept giving me iron infusions. It didn't solve my problems. The hopeless consultant i was under just couldn't see that active CD was the problem which led to my 2nd resection. The section of my gut that was then resected was in my small bowel.
Needless to say the arrogant consultant couldn't even bring himself to apologise for his complete lack of diagnosis.
Thankfully i don't need his 'advice' anymore!
